Nope… sorry, just pure knowledge by testing, and ended by putting plex on different machine, as my Synology does not have HW Acc anymore (have Ryzen becouse my Intel one burn out).
But if you are ok with Terminal and have a lot of ram on NAS, really good is to make ramdisk for transcoding.
BTW: On synology, I always run PLEX in docker instead of NAS directly, becouse Synology make pretty stupid decisions lately, so i love to have my Plex as separated as possible. Only issue is you must set it properly to get HW Transcode working (there are a lot of manuals on internet)
When we first started using HW transcoding on Synology,
without having the tonemapping modules included,
We could use docker’s modules AND overlay the existing PlexMediaServer
This allowed you to setup PMS using the resident package but then switch to docker if you wanted
While I’ve not tested recently, there is nothing known to prevent it from running correctly.
I am slightly lost…this docker solution will work even on my DS218j? I always play movies without transcoding because of really low CPU/RAM. The only obstacle is speed of internet or to be more specific - my LG is not able to process more than 100 MB/s from ethernet cable.
Oh, I did not noticed, he have j version of synology, that does not make sense to use docker as Synology does not provide it… Well, Synology lately does not provide a lot of stuff… even killed codecs for NAS.
Have same LG TV, there are some limitations, but i hit them only when playing 4K Wither with enourmous bitrate… Otherwise, working OK.
You can always go for Apple TV/nVidia Shield and play movies on that with plex app, they are more then enought powerfull to play literally anythink
I have ethernet cable to TV and Apple TV, ale TV and AppleTV is connected via HDMI 2.1. If you have HDMI 1.4 it can be on limit on some movies (4K@30fps max), if you have HDMI2 or higher, you are safe as HDMI 2 have 4K@60
Apple TV is capable of HDMI 2.1
nVidia Shield have HDMI 2.0b
