Plex seems to crash when trying to transcode H265 encoded videos.

Sometimes they play with a strange reddish ghosting on the video.

I added the Vapi driver to the config file which seemed to help with playing the videos at their original quality.

Can you help me improve my experience with these files ? DSM claims to be able to handle HEVC

Afaik that codec pack is for synologies own playback software and Plex cannot use it. IS HW transcoding enabled? for 920+ Plex can only transcode HEVC if HW transcoding is enabled and will transcode to h264

To add to BigWheel,

What Synology claims to handle, which is through their Audio Station, Video Station, and Photo Station apps is independent of what PMS can handle.

The media extensions you added only work with Synology apps.

As stated by BigWheel, PMS will transcode HEVC.

If you are having PMS playback problems, the best next steps are:

  1. Settings - Server - General - Show Advanced
    a. Enable DEBUG logging (it should already be enabled)
    b. Disable VERBOSE logging (it should already be disabled)
    c. SAVE if you make changes.

  2. Now recreate the problem you’re seeing (30 seconds of playback will do)

  3. Stop Playback

  4. Wait 20 seconds for PMS to settle

  5. Settings - Server - Troubleshooting (lower left panel) - Download Logs

  6. Attach the ZIP file so we can review it

The problem you’re having seems ENTIRELY networking based.

The connection at the Syno keeps resetting itself. Please observe.

Here you can see the player appeared to disconnect but I suspect it’s the network the Syno is on.

How is the Syno connected ? Wired Gigabit or Wifi ?
If WiFI – PLUG IT IN . Servers on WiFi are always fraught with problems.
If already wired, check the connections.

Here, you can see the NAS is capable of HEVC playback.

Is the IP address of the Synology set to a static address ?
(Best results are achieved when the server is static. Playback isn’t interrupted every time the DHCP address refreshes)

The IP is indeed static, and it’s connected via Ethernet (the mobile phone isn’t obviously) :thinking:

It’s my main file server and I’ve had no other connectivity related issues present themselves.

When copying data, you won’t see the retry errors because copying is not the same as streaming in real -time

PMS, on the other hand, will log everything which isn’t right. It will also have impact on the playback.

The fact the player (192.168.0.65) disconnected is a clue there’s a problem between the two.

65 is the WIFI mobile device.

This problem only presents with HEVC transcodes, the app never restarts for other codecs.

Are you sure it disconnected from the network and this was not a manifestation in the logs of the app crashing ?

On a device, if the app crashes then the OS will close the connection (socket)

There is a fairly easy way to confirm the status of your codecs.

  1. Stop PMS

  2. Open FileStation

  3. Navigate: PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Codecs

  4. You will see the different version folders and also the .device_id file.

  5. Delete all you see there EXCEPT the .device_id (this is the server’s codec license key)

  6. Restart PMS.

  7. Now, using another player (Plex/Web will do), play back the file again.

  8. There will be a slight extra delay before it starts.
    – This is PMS downloading a fresh copy of the codec.

  9. If this plays OK, Next try the app again. If success - we know it was the codec.

  10. If failure of Plex/web or the app. Download and attach the logs ZIP file (all of it) please.
