PMS not saving progress

Server Version#: 1.19.1.2645
Player Version#:

Hi all, in the past few weeks our plex server has stopped saving progress of played items from every library. We will play an item, and whether we are halfway through or even finish it, plex continues to say it is unread. This happens whether we use an Android, iOS, or web client so I believe it is server related. I have tried the basics like uninstalling the server, and also downgrading to a few different versions from Feb/April. No luck. Has anyone encountered this bug recently or know of any fixes?

I have the same problem. Wife is watching something on our nvidia shield, and it’s not showing up as playing in the dashboard. Network traffic still shows up though. But it doesn’t save progress.

Some times it will show up in the dashboard, a lot of the time it won’t though.

It has only happened on wireless client (nvidia shield) and not on wired (Linux desktop app) for me, both locally.

Server is wired debian box, running plex in linuxserver docker container.

Server version 1.19.1.2645
Nvidia shield and plex app also on the latest software.

Here is the same thing:

Interesting. These are all local clients on our network (wired and wireless). As far as I can tell it correctly shows now playing just doesn’t save the play state.

Yup. Came in here specifically to create a post about this problem. I just got an Nvidia Shield device and have been testing. The shield device sometimes doesn’t show on the dashboard and doesn’t save progress randomly. I can’t seem to recreate the problem consistently.

It only seems to be happening with the Nvidia Shield device. I can play the same video file 100 times and sometimes it shows on the dashboard and saves progress, other times it doesn’t.

All our other devices report fine. This problem only seems to be relegated to our Shield device which is disappointing.

Yeah after further testing I think the shield might be the culprit. I’ve downloaded an older apk of the Android app and so far it has been working correctly. Perhaps a recent Android app introduced a bug?

That’s gotta be it, the latest plex android app causing it (7.31.0.16802). I tested on the previous version (7.30.2.16712) and the issue isn’t happening.

Awesome, I wonder if it is Shield specific? The app is not specifically Android TV related right, it’s just an Android app that works across devices. For now I’ll just not update to the latest version and it seems OK.

I don’t believe it’s shield specific, because the same issue happened on another (cheap) android tv device I have.

I’m not sure if it’s android tv specific or the mobile mode of the app also. I haven’t seen the issue from my mobile device yet (pixel 3a).

Edit: ok it happened from my pixel, too.

so it seems to be the latest plex android app on any device.

I can make the issue happen most of the time by playing a video, skipping back a couple of times, pausing it, exiting the video, then when I play it again, it won’t show up in the dashboard as Now playing, hence, not saving progress. But it’s quite random and hard to replicate.

Frustrating because I was really enjoying the fix to movie alphabet selection that the latest version fixed! Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

The latest plex android app reports to have fixed the issue

WHAT’S NEW

NEW IN 8.0.0:
• Player: direct play subtitles even when transcoding audio or video.
• [TV] Live TV: Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k users can now disable transcode of interlaced streams.
• [TV] Browse and play Plex Movies & TV without creating an account.
• [TV] Updated layouts for Home, Recommended, and Library screens.
• Player: Play progress would sometimes not be reported to the server.
• SHIELD PMS: ‘move storage location’ could fail sometimes.

This is a very old issue dating back to 2017. I see this on my new Visio tv- seems only to happen with certain formats, but is very consistent. Would be great to hear from Plex the reason for the issue, and address it in an update.

Well sometimes I hope you can turn off this feature as most of my library is music and videos (and Music Videos of course) and it doesn’t help if anything starts at a random point in the M/V. Though I have a separate Movies library and it might be useful to remember the progress in that case.
