So for the past few days the PMS on my Shield Pro is not showing content through the Plex app on the shield but working everywhere else??? Strange…
I can see and playback content on my other devices.
Content works on my AppleTV, browser and I can see the attached ExtHDD drive hosting the content via my computer. I’ve also been able to transfer new files to this HDD and have it playback.
Before this post, I’ve restarted the shield a few times (this has solved connectivity issues affecting playback everywhere). I’ve also just cleared the cache and data and force stopped both the Plex app and PMS app.
If I go into Plex > Settings > Plex Media Server > it is showing the PMS is ‘Stopped’ but repeated attempts to turn it on does nothing. It thinks for a while and stays at ‘Stopped’.
Luckily I can play my library elsewhere but I use my shield pro more often. It’s such a great device having jumped from iTunes Sharing about 12 months ago.
Looking at the forums, it seems others may have a similar issue but I cannot tell if it is the same, so posting for clarity and help others with the same problem.

I’m hitting the same exact issue. If I open Plex on my Shield, I see warning icons and all my libraries are unavailable. If I open the Plex webapp on my laptop and try to connect, I get this error:
Update your Plex Media Server
The server SHIELD Android TV is out of date and cannot be used. This version of Plex Web requires Plex Media Server 1.18.3 or higher.
I’ve already tried looking for updates through the Google Play app and there are no updates available. I looked in the Plex settings and I can see I’m running version 1.18.0.1913. How are we supposed to play our content if the latest Plex app is suddenly not good enough?
BTW, I connected to the Plex webapp directly on my Shield and I can browse my whole library, but this doesn’t really help since I’d like to play my content on my TV.
The problem is that the apps are indeed out of date. For some reason I don’t understand, the Google Play Store app is not automatically updating the two Plex apps on my system. Here’s how I did that manually:
Open Google Play Store
Go to Search
Type in “ple” (yes, “ple”, that’s not a typo) and search
The first two search results should be the Plex client and the Plex server
Click on the Plex client app and click the Upgrade button
Go back to the search results
Click on the Plex server app and click the Upgrade button
And voila! Now the app is actually updated and your libraries should be working again.
Thanks Tom, I’ve got auto update set so I should have the latest release, but I see @kaiyoma reply and maybe I have to actively ask to upgrade. I’ll give it a go. FYI, I had the the 1.18.0 > 1.18.3 issue months ago and had to manually ugrade. Maybe my PMS at 1.21.1 is OOD, I’ll see if I can upgrade to a higher release and report back. Thanks again great to see the community help each other.
