For my current setup, I have PMS working on my Nvidia Shield which is connected directly to the router with a network cable. For storage, the Shield pulls from a 5TB external connected to my router through it’s USB 3.0 port. I need to expand my storage space and was thinking about getting a Synology model DS218+. My question is, should i move PMS to the Synology as well? Does one transcode 4K and/or handle multiple streams better? Will it perform better if i have my server and media in the same place?
No, No and No.
AFAIK there is no hw supported transcoding on synologys yet.
The 2xx series cpu is way too weak to handle anything that matters at all.
what i would do with minimal investment:
- get a 4xx version as the 2xx is overpriced and it will be soon too little anyway.
- leave the movie/series data on the NAS then
- leave PMS on shield and live with the buggy PMS version because of the hw transcoding capabilities of the PMS on shield.
alternatively with more investment and more satisfactory garanteed:
- get a powerful NUC or other pc, run pms there for transcodes. pms will be more stable, easy to access, etc…
- get an external drive case for 4 or more drives and put your hdds in there connect it to NUC with USB3
- use shield as plex player only
