PMS on shield 2017 error transcoding dolby true hd

Server Version#: Version 1.19.4.2935

I’m having an issue with any video that has a dolby TrueHd track. I noticed that when I tried to detect intro for TV shows with that track that it would just hang and my console was filled with transcoding errors. So I did a test tried to create an optimized version of a show with a true hd track and the conversion hangs with some really long negative percent like “-323490284%” with the same transcoding errors.

These are the errors I get that are repeated over and over until I kill the conversion.

Jul 06, 2020 03:55:28.005 [10206] ERROR - [Transcoder] Error while decoding stream #0:1: I/O error

I’m using a synology DS220J as my storage for the server with the server itself running on the shield.

Any ideas on what is causing this error? Let me know if there is more information I can provide. Thank you!

I’ve search around the forums and online and I can’t find any clues to what’s happening here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

try full logs > plex web > settings > troubleshooting > download logs > drop zip file into reply

how much space is available, maybe running out of local storage while trying to decode to giant wave file, would be my guess.

Thanks for your reply! Here is the log file for today, I made sure to give it a try and while it was throwing the errors I downloaded the log. Plex Media Server.log (1.7 MB)

I checked the free space on the shield and there is 4.9 gigs free. That seems like it should be enough space to decode.

yeah, I bet you are wrong about that, uncompressed multichannel truehd are huge.

I don’t see any other useful info or anything that specifically says ‘out of space’, but the IO error would mean that the file is not getting decoded (or not being accessible if it did).

sorry, are you trying to play this on the shield, or is the shield server transcoding for some other client, and if so what ?

I don’t quite understand why truehd would be transcoded to wav, unless the client player could not use ac3/eac3

I initially noticed the problem when using the “detect intro” feature of plex, which produce the same errors I pasted above. My theory was that it was trying to convert the truehd track in order to do the analysis, so to test the theory I used the “optimize” feature to convert the file, which is what I did before sending that log file., and it produces the same error.

Normally I do play the files either on my shield or on my TV’s plex app, I currently don’t have a sound system that supports dolby True HD.

The file itself is 3.9 gigs though, so that should enough space for the uncompressed wav file, no? Would you suggest that I try to free up more space? or try to add more external storage to my shield?

you might try going into the shield settings and clear cache for plex client/server. (not the data though, that will clear your login/settings).

I would definitely see if you can clear up any more space.

also, post the media info. plex web > go to video > 3 dots > get info > view xml

use 3 backtics before and after the xml paste into post, or the ‘preformatted’ button in the reply icon bar

you might also want to consider moving the plex data to an external usb3 ssd drive

see @

Sure I’ll give that a try.

Here is the media info of the file.

This did the trick, I had an extra 64 gig thumb drive that I plugged into my shield and moved the storage onto that, now it converts properly with no errors.

Thank you so much @TeknoJunky for your help!

just be aware that thumb drives are not super reliable in the long term when used with the amount of daily read/writes that plex will generate.

I would suggest you manually download the library database every few days or so, in case the thumb drive craps out, at least you will have a copy of the database you can use to restore to a replacement drive.
