Dolby TrueHD issue

Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 8.0.1.17410 (nVidia Shield)

So this app has been flawless on my network, but I finally ran into a hiccup I can’t solve.

I ripped a 4K HDR Blu-Ray to my server as I always do (Akira - 1988 4K Remastered). There’s an audio track on there that is Dolby TrueHD (5.1 / 192kHz / 24 bit) - Japanese Audio

There is also an english Dolby TrueHD (5.1) audio track on there (standard audio resolution).

The english track plays perfectly fine as do all the AC3 tracks. But the Japanese one causes the stream to stutter (it will play fine for about 5 seconds, then it will play / pause and desync entirely).

The nVidia Shield is hard-wired to my network and I can transfer to it at full gigabit speed. The same behaviour occurs on my AppleTV 4K using the Infuse app to access it.

Here’s where it gets weird.

If I play the audio to my display without my receiver turned on, the audio plays fine with both the shield and the AppleTV.
If I power up my receiver, the stutters occur.

So naturally you’d assume it’s the receiver. It’s a Marantz 6012 Dolby Atmos receiver bi-amped to another receiver and set up for an 11.2 setup with ceiling speakers.

So if I take the original disc and throw it in my XBox One X, it plays absolutely fine using the Japanese 192 kHz TrueHD track with my receiver powered on. The receiver shows the 192 kHz signal on the front in all the scenarios when I play that audio.

Now, the AC3 Japanese audio sounds almost identical, so this isn’t a pressing issue- as that obviously plays fine. Other full Dolby Atmos titles that are 4K HDR play flawlessly and pass the audio to the receiver as well.

I’m stumped to what the issue is. I’ve tried changing my output settings, and the receiver can play all of them- the bandwidth between the MacOS server and the nVidia Shield & Apple TV isn’t the problem either. It’s only with TrueHD tracks that play at 192 kHz it seems.

Just wondering if this issue can be resolved in case I run into other discs like this.

What firmware is your Shield on? There were some fixes implemented by NVidia to address issues with TrueHD.

The Android TV SW Version is: 8.0.2(32.5.205.105)

I updated it last night thinking that was causing the issue.

But it also happens with the Infuse App on the Apple TV which is connected to my Plex Server, so I’ve determined it’s a Plex server issue.

it likely related to the shield itself

Again, it occurs on the AppleTV when I feed it from Plex Media Server as well, so it’s not the shield.

Does the now playing window show it as transcoding, direct play, direct stream? how is your shield/apple TV hooked up to other equipment?

Everything is set to direct. Nothing ever transcodes when I play back with this setup.

Shield is going through HDMI to the receiver, Shield is hardwired via gigabit.

Do you have passthrough enabled and the codecs enabled in the Shields own settings?

Yup, those are set too.

DTS-HD, DTS:X, Atmos and all the other codecs work. It’s this one 192 kHz track that’s being pesky and I can’t figure out why. Works fine if I play it straight to the display the receiver off, as soon as I power it on, it’s a disaster. But the exact same audio off the disc plays flawlessly on both the display alone and with the receiver when played through the XBox One X.

I have the exact same issue here, with the Nvidia Shield TV Pro 2019 connected to a Sony HT-X9000F soundbar that is Dolby Atmos compatible.

Issue doesn’t occur to me with other 4K HDR bluray rips (even a 60fps 4K HDR rip of Gemini Man runs fine)

Player Version#: 8.1.0.17893 (nVidia Shield TV Pro 2019)

Same issue with Akira?

Yeah, same issue with Akira and its 192 Khz track. Issue doesn’t happen with other 4K HDR rips as I mentioned.

I noticed that the regular 1080p bluray (non 4K) also has the same 192khz audio track. It would be interesting to test a rip of it

I’ve been looking for a file to test with 192khz But I don’t have any. wondering if either of you are willing to provide a sample clip https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/

I actually own the 1080p Blu-Ray of Akira with the 192 kHz track on it as well.

I may try ripping that one and seeing if the issue replicates itself. Somehow still working like crazy through all this pandemic stuff, so it may not be for a little while, but I’ll update the thread if I get a few moments to try it.

Update, just ripped it and tried it (had an hour to kill)

Exact same behaviour from the 1080p rip & the 1080p BluRay as the 4K rip when choosing the 192 kHz Japanese audio.

Any other ideas? Is this a legitimate bug.

For anybody in development, I can upload the 1080p sample clip I just made which is about a gig in size.

if you can put it up on Google Drive or something like that and message me a link I can download and make a bug report with it.

Same behaviour occurred with the sample file as well.

My receiver lights up the 192 kHz Dolby True HD signal when it tries to play it. It plays the audio fine, but the video randomly falls off sync but about 5-10 seconds and then never comes back in sync. If you switch it to another track in the file, it starts playing fine from the point at which it froze.

You’ll notice an English True-HD track on there as well. The pesky audio is again, the 192 kHz Japanese 5.1 True HD audio.

Also, do you want a sample of the 4K version as well? I’d provide a 2 gig sample if so.

should not be needed unless is it does something different

Ok awesome, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Hopefully this is solvable.
