PMS service fails to start on Ubuntu PC

I have been running PMS under Ubuntu (PC, NOT server) for some months now, without any service issues. But lately, the service has been failing to come up; please see screen shot from systemctl. When it first started, I could start it manually, which used to work, albeit needing more and more goes, to bring it up. Now, it will not start, no matter how often I try.

Also there is no appropriate 1 tag category that I can see, so I chose PMS.

I saw an old issue from techmattr, Jul 2020, which is very similar to mine. This was fixed by doing ‘sudo chown -R plex:plex /var/lib/plexmediaserver’ and then a restart : ChuckPa.

I have tried this solution, but PMS service still will not start.

Also, I could not find what, to me, seems to be an appropriate tag 1, so I have used PMS!!

If any other info is needed, please let me know.

Since sending you the log tar, the new version of PMS has auto-installed on my machine - 1.25.2.5409-f11334058. Having seen this, I thought I would try to start PMS, which worked. I then rebooted the machine, during which the PMS service started fine.

Has the new version of PMS solved my issue of service failure?

ChuckPa - Since my last comment about an auto update fixing my ‘service restart too quickly’ issue, now the latest auto-update of PMS (1.25.3.54009-f11334058) gives me the same error.
I had no response from you about my last update and tar of logs. I can only assume that this new version has caused my service issue to return. Can you please confirm, and if so, PEASE let me know, and confirm fix date.

Please check the size of the database file

I see in your logs where it claims to forward migrations but does nothing.

I also fail to see any network activity.

Although the PMS service failed at machine start-up with the new version of PMS, a subsequent manual start with the same version, succeeded.

Is there is a database size limit? I used the same database on the 2 previous versions of PMS.

I have included the current logs which should show fail at start-up, and the following manual start-up, service working.

I also tried to download Databases, but it is empty.

1. You’re using WiFi for the server – Highly discouraged because WiFi is half-duplex (at best - 1/2 network max speed because only 1 device can talk at a time). Wired allows the client(s) to respond independent of other traffic.

Here is a screen shot of boot-up, earlier today.

To give you a feel for what I do, I turn on the Ubuntu machine with PMS on it, whenever I need. I only need to serve one user. I serve music from PMS, on a machine upstairs in my house, to the lounge, downstairs. I’m using 5 ghz WIFI because it is the easiest solution, and for music, it normally works well.

I hope this gives you a feel for my requirements.

What do I need to do to make my PMS service, stable?

Let’s find out what journalctl has to say about the failure.

sudo journalctl -xe | grep -i plex

It should spit out , at the bottom, the reason for the SEGV

As an alternative, dmesg | grep -i plex will give you similar but with less info.

What I’m hoping to find is what caused the failure.

Also, your logs (manually created tar.gz of the Logs directory) might shed some light on it)

I apologize for the delay. I have been offline a lot (covid).
Somewhere in that I lost this thread.

I see in your logs where PMS starts (opens the ports) then simple stops.

As a test to identify whether the server’s data or the host, I’d like to do this:

1. cd /var/lib/plexmediaserver
2. sudo mv Library Library.keep (slide it off to the side to keep safe)
3. Start Plex.
4. See if the processes come up and stay running.
5. If they do, it’s likely a really bad corruption in the data causing a core dump which never even makes it to the logs.
6. We will need to reclaim the server and start over if that’s the case.

First, please do steps 1-4 and let’s evaluate the status at that point.

Make any settings preferences you wish that it presents,

When you Finish, you’ll arrive at the dashboard.

You’ll see your server completing the initialization and ingestion of the media.
