PMS Randomly Dies and cannot be restarted via service restart

Randomly PMS will quit working, I’ll get a notification from my monitor service and log in and try to restart it via the command line but the process wont kill. It appears to be <defunct> and won’t die, the only way I can get it to restart successfully is to restart the entire server. Everything else appears to be working fine, my other services respond just fine but I cannot for the life of me get PMS to restart successfully.

I have had this sme exact problem twice in the past week. It just happened again yesterday evening.

I just downloaded the logs which might have relevant data - however, the zip is too large to attach (15.3 MB). Plex Media Server Logs 2024-04-21_14-56-45

In addition to trying to start Plex via the Services app/taskbar icon, I’ve tried going into Task Manager and ending all Plex Server processes and restarting PMS (non-service) and it still failed to start.

Again, only restarting Windows allowed PMS to load properly.

I’m seeing a huge amount of network adapter instability.
Either the DHCP address keeps changing (wacky server) or there is a connection / signal problem.

Thanks @ChuckPa! What I find interesting is that nothing else on the device seems to have any issue? Wouldn’t I be seeing connection issues with lots of things? Plex is the only thing giving me any issues

Also why does this stop me from being able to simply restart the process if it is the issue? Any troubleshooting pointers?

Here’s a thought & experiment.

  1. Stop PMS
  2. Go to the PlexMediaServer shared folder
  3. Rename AppData → AppData - 1.40.2 (so we can identify it)
  4. Now install fresh from Package Center
  5. As you install this, Give it a Friendly name which included “1.29.2” so it doesn’t collide with the main one
  6. Setup one library section.
  7. Let’s see what happens.

I’ve seen cases where very very deep corruption will stop PMS from running right.
The combination of 1.29.2 and a new fresh install will tell us a great deal.

Sure thing I can give that a go – however this install is only probably like 6mo’s old. I redid it not that long ago when I had some data loss.

Those logs help me a lot but not sure if we’re there yet.

  1. Do you deliberately have IPv6 enabled / need it?
    – Your router is at 192.168.1.1 , not an IPv6 address.

  2. You’re showing IPv6 traffic … Proxy?

What happens if you go into Settings - Server - Network and turn off the IPv6 support to force it to speak IPv4 to the router?

What I’m trying to figure out – WHY WHY WHY are you getting so many adapter Link reset message which will drive it nuts very quickly.

I don’t have a need for ipv6 so let me try to turn that off. Yes I do have a bunch of dockers that need network as well so that’s probably accurate on that part
