PMS setup survey survey

Hey all.

I see a lot of questions from folks about what kind of PMS setup they have, the server, the storage, etc… I thought a Google Forms survey might be an easy way to collect/show the information. If enough folks answer we could provide stats and metrics that would be interesting to see.

I am in the process of creating the survey now. I wanted to get some input on what kinds of questions/data/statistics folks would be interested in seeing in a survey.

This is what I have so far:

  • System Class = Server, Desktop, Laptop, Small Factor
  • CPU Manufacturer = free form text
  • CPU Architecture = free form text
  • Number of CPU Cores = 1 - 10
  • CPU Speed (in ghz) = number
  • Amount of RAM (in GB) = number
  • RAM Speed (in ghz) = number
  • Primary/OS Storage Type = HDD, SSD
  • Primary/OS Storage Size (in GB) = number
  • Data Storage Type = HDD, SSD
  • Data Storage Location = Internal, External (USB), NAS/Network, Cloud
  • Data Storage Cloud Vendor = N/A, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, ???
  • Data Storage Size (in GB) = number

Any others?

And for now I am going to keep most of the questions free-form text fields because I don’t know what all options should would be appropriate/complete. If y’all have input for that please do share.

Or, if y’all think this is a dumb ass idea let me know and I won’t waste cycles on it.

system class should also include NAS, as many nas can run PMS directly, in addition to being the storage server.

Also, server itself is sort of vague, a little more specificity would provide better insight.

ie: home-made server vs enterprise/rack server, virtual machine, etc.

Would you not want something on the OS running it?
And whether it’s on a VM / Docker etc?

Number of typical clients / users?

Thank you both. Collecting feedback from other places I posted this and will create a survey soon.

I am quite sure it is like 99.9999% of internet surveys; set up for a predetermined result and having no use in the real world.

Surveys are, more often than not, just a way for someone to justify some position or idea they already have. Subtle differences in the wording of the choices, which are pretty easy to set up, can, and usually do, skew the results rendering the survey invalid.

Yes - a vote on how difficult or easy you found the setup- The big elephant in the room. Might improve support/ease of install

A few reasons I can think of:

  • To better understand the user base
  • Results would help new users see what others are using to help figure out what they should get for their setup
  • If you’re having a specific unique problem you can see if others with a similar setup are also having the same problem
  • General curiosity
