I had podcasts disabled for a long time. I went to try them out and all I get now is an error or blank page " Something went wrong - An unexpected error occurred."
Any ideas?

Yeah. Well, that was a known issue for a whole year and officially Podcasts as a feature is being sunset aka killed on April 15th, this Friday.

Well, they did add podcasts. They did a revamp of it some time around the end of 2020 and the first couple of months of 2021, adding additional bells and whistles to the Plex app that would make the listening of the podcasts more friendly. Those app features included skip and rewind, basic downloading functionality of podcasts based on variables like current 3 episodes.
Then shortly after all of that, various bits and pieces of podcasts functionality started to come undone, making anything that Plex itself had promoted as useful, USELESS. Hampering the podcast experience.
Scheduled downloads would not automatically download. The whole importing mechanism broke, even within the Plex app many of us received errors attempting to add our own manually and was brought up in March of 2021 and went through various roundabouts with the Plex team, saying how they were “looking into it”. Everyone else though was getting frustrated with no further details of the situation.
After a few dozen bumps and disgruntled posts later AND after a whole year had gone by with no huge developments or improvements, Plex FINALLY announced that podcasts would be deprecated, given the ax, put to death.
