Poor photo quality via Plex

Hello,

I added my photos in my plex libraries under my “photos” section.
Via plex media player or plex media server, I can look at them without any problem but unfortunately their quality is not great, they appear a bit blurry and not tack sharp as they should.

When I look at my pictures via windows explorer or macosx I can’t see any loss of quality.

My computer is running Windows 10 on a 6 core machine with SSD.
My NAS is DS1513+ connected directly to my computer with RJ45 the speed is high about 110mb/s, which should be more than enough to display 4~5mb jpg, so I’m having hard time to understand why my photos don’t appear at their best with PLEX app.

Also even when I use the plex apps I notice some delays between photos, it doesn’t feel very responsive.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you in advance!

Damien

If you view them from the Web (on Plex.tv) theres a noticeable quality loss on a 5mb jpg? That is not how it should be.

Can you view a file, and then post the Plex Media Server log from viewing that single file off your Synology?

Hello Keithah,

thanks for your reply,
just to make sure I’ll provide the right information for you, you ask me to:

is it the correct way to access the “Plex Media Server log”?

I have a doubt because when I download the log it seems to pack a lot of file in a zip.
how can I send you the information for that single file off my Synology?"

thank you for your help!

the only file I need in that zip is the ‘Plex Media Server.log’ file.

It would help to stop PMS, start it, and then do the steps above, to make sure thats the only thing in the log.

Same issue. What are the correct settings to direct play photos to any 4k Android TV? Thanks for help!

Hello Keithah,

I attached below the Plex Media Server log (there should be 6 files in the zip file)
Let me know if you need anything else.

Thank you again for having a look at the issue!

I’m seeing this as well. Downloaded images are full resolution, but images in the viewer and synced images are lower resolution. I looked at 1 image that I saved to camera roll multiple ways through the iOS app- Original image is 3840 × 5760, saved image from the non synced library is 3840 × 5760, saved to camera roll from synced library is 1440 × 2160. The image that is displayed in the Plex iOS app also looks to be 1440 × 2160 to my eyes.

Sync quality is set to 3840x2160 (Highest)
Connection is VPN over cellular
Server is running on an non 5k iMac 27"

So after looking into this I worry that it may be by design and that the quality is limited to tv resolutions. I feel that the iOS apps should be able to view resolutions higher than 4k, especially on pictures. At the very least the compression needs to be toned down. I resized a few images to 1440 × 2160 in photoshop and this resulted in a slightly cleaner image with less compression artifacts but images still just look too soft.

It seems in your case the photos get downrezed into an inferior format and resolution,

hello: I am also experiencing this issue. I have great looking pictures on my iphone camera roll and as soon as they are copied onto the Folder where Plex has access to (library) and watched over the iOS app, the quality is extremely low. I would appreciate any updated info since this is the main reason why I purchased the Pass

Hello Keithah,

Did you had a chance to look at the Log file I attached with my previous message?

Thank you in advance for any help,
Damien

Hello there,

It has been about 2 months now that I started the thread and I’m (we are) still waiting for some answers or suggestions.
I’m looking forward to hear from you soon.
Thank you,

So Since I stopped hoping for an answer (paying for a plex pass with no customer support doesn’t feel very serious from Plex)
I researched an alternative and found out that KODI does everything I hoped for, and it does it perfectly.
So if you have the same problem as I do when displaying the pictures I can recommend to use KODI instead.
It’s free, fast and display pictures as they should.

I hope it helps some of you.
