Poor plex playback in nearly every client

Hi.

I am running a plex server on a synology DS918+ NAS. All of my DVD/Blu ray rips (direct play) either don’t play smooth or when they do play smooth they skip a frame every 30 seconds or so. I know this is not a network issue as the files play fine directly from the NAS in file explorer (this also rules out an issue with the files themselves (.mp4). This is the case in every PLEX client I have tried so far except android (and I don’t want to watch all my movies on a phone). The other clients I have tried are chrome, windows 10, android TV (sony bravia 4k), chromecast and PS4. Each of these clients has one of the above issues (unsmooth playback or skipped frames every 30 seconds or so).

My PC specs are
i7 8750H
Nvidia GTX 1050ti
16GB Ram
m.2 ssd

I’m at the end of my tether with this and I have put a huge amount of time trying to work out whats going on (not to mention the time ripping blu rays/DVDs).

Please can somebody suggest something I try (I am on an up to date version of plex on all these devices before somebody asks).

Thanks

Hi thanks for your response. Is there any specific part of the logs you would want to see as I don’t want to put them all online as it includes personal info (e.g. email address).

Attached is the XML data
XML plex.txt (3.9 KB)

Yeh I’m also having issues with android tv, ps4, windows 10 and chrome for random frames skips, unsmooth playback (particularly android tv). Buffering hasn’t occured often, its more the frame skips and unsmooth playback which is bothering me. I wouldn’t care if it buffered a bit at first and then played back smoothly :joy: .

I’ll give the handbrake settings you suggested a go. Is there anything else you could suggest? Because from all the reviews I looked at this NAS should be easily capable for 4k transcoding let alone direct play at 480p

Also what is 64bit offset? is it something I can set in handbrake?

what is a 64bit offset? How would I change it, in handbrake?

Ah thanks. Will this alter the video quality in any way?

Just to be clear I should enable both fast decode and web optimised?

I’ve tried it. Still really poor (unsmooth) playback (not buffering but unsmooth) on android TV and to a lesser extent on chrome.

Could it be something to do with the fact that in dashboard bandwidth is up and down like this… or is this merely down to plex sending data in “packets”?

Here are two files.

They both play fine through VLC on my PC (even directly from the NAS) but play poorly (unsmooth - not buffering) through pretty much any plex client in direct play.

They are both incredibly low bitrate so I don’t get why this should be. I have selected match source framerate for both in handbrake. The “raw” mkv from makemkv’s playback poorly as well.

This NAS is capable of 4K transcoding so I really don’t get why this is happening.

Should I just delete the files and transfer them over to a new folder?

Or is there anything else I need to do?
