The PoS Plex for Apple TV app 8.23 crashes 100% upon launch.

PMS for Mac 1.32.5.7349

  • dedicated PMS for Mac host Mac (I’ve never seen even 20% CPU load)
  • iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) Apple OEM 750GB SSD (713GB available) 16GB RAM
  • 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7 (4 cores + hyper-threading ≈ “8” cores)
  • GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB GPU
  • PMS Library store: WB 12TB My Book External HD via USB 3.0 (~2TB free)
  • 1Gbps Ethernet connection directly to Apple TV connected Ethernet switch

  • 1Gbps Ethernet connection directly to PMS host connected Ethernet switch
  • Plex for Apple TV app is always only app launched after Apple TV restart
  • Background app refresh disabled

Now my wife is really PO’d at me. (She had calmed down a little after last year’s 8.6 HD FU to only be disdainful concerning my decision to spend $1,500 “cutting the cord.”)

What an idiot I am to trust Plex developers might actually test their dung, telling my wife it would just take a minute to update from PoS 8.22 to the newly released 8.23, hoping Plex may have fixed the 8.21 audio FU after only 6 weeks of not being able to watch current TV, nor play PMS recorded OTA Live TV HD shows. without disabling the primary audio engine.

As always, (since burned, but not this bad, by Plex for Apple TV app 8.6 auto-update), I:

  1. manually exited Plex for Apple TV 8.22;
  2. launched the Apple TV App Store
  3. doubled-checked that Plex for Apple TV 8.23 compatible tvOS 15.6 (says ≥14.3);
  4. clicked upon UPDATE;
  5. exited the App Store;
  6. restarted the Apple TV;
  7. navigated to the Plex for Apple TV app icon;
  8. clicked upon the Plex for Apple TV app icon with the Apple TV remote center button;
  9. screen goes gray;
  10. presumably, Plex for Apple TV app crashes;
  11. (as I wrote, no Plex splash screen);
  12. tvOS app icon display screen.

I’ve tried repeating steps 6 – 12.

I’ve tried launching the Plex for Apple TV app from the App Store.

I tried restarting the PMS for Mac host Mac.

It doesn’t matter if PMS is otherwise idle. (I waited until PMS was idle before restarting its host Mac.)

I’ve tried launching an other Apple TV app, (eg, HDHomeRun, Prime Video, which all run just fine, BTW).

The PoS Plex for Apple TV app 8.23 crashes 100% upon launch.

The PoS Plex for Apple TV app 8.23 is not displayed on the Plex player for Mac > Settings > Authorized Devices listing.

I’ll collect logs, crash reports, etc. later tonight after my wife goes to bed.

A hotfix 8.23.1 release is being produced for a crash on launch.

I realized after posting that I’m not sure what I can capture regarding the Plex for Apple TV app when it immediately crashes.

I did enable Apple TV Settings > Apps > App Settings > Plex > Send Crash Reports.

I then attempted launching the Plex for Apple TV app 8.23 several times hoping that having set “Send Crash Reports” to [On], Plex would directly receive crash reports that were illuminating and useful.

Indeed, Plex for Apple TV app 8.23.1 does not crash upon launch, however . . .

Multiple times the Plex for Apple TV app has abruptly exited watching an OTA Live TV show, reverting to Live TV > Guide. Unfortunately, I have not been able to capture Plex for Apple TV app logs before the logs rolled.

This appears to be new failing behavior not seen in 8.22.

Is there any way to increase the number of Plex for Apple TV app log files retained?

Multiple times yesterday, 9 August 2023 5:24pm – 5:30pm PDT [-0700], the Plex for Apple TV app 8.23.1 failed attempting to play a fully recorded 1080i OTA Live TV show, “CBS Evening News With Norah O’Donnell (2019)” S2023E157, fully successfully recorded 8 August 2023 6:30pm – 7:00pm PDT [-0700] with Use Old Video Player [On]. Both Plex player for macOS and for iOS successfully play this episode.

This appears to be new failing behavior not seen in 8.22.

Playback was successful after setting Use Old Video Player to [Off].

(Remember Plex for Apple TV app 8.21 & 8.22 can not watch/play current TV (ie, 720p & 1080i) unless “Use Old Audio Engine " is set to [On ].)

(I will be sending to staff a link to a ZIP archive containing logs & the database.)

Taking time that I will, of course, never be able to un-waste, I verified that, despite Plex making things much worse, the severe bugs introduced with the Plex for Apple TV app 8.21 still cripple Plex and have not been remedied in 47 f’ing days:

In this forum topic you raised the issue of the 8.23 release crashing upon launch.
This was resolved in 8.23.1 and that should be the end of this forum topic
