Position in TV Series Different Across Devices

Server Version#: 4.76.1
Player Version#: unknown

My partner watches a specific tv series in the lounge room using an android type, set top box with Plex installed. She has her own profile on plex with her media loaded. She watches her show season and decides to go to bed to finish her episode. She stops the media, logs out of plex then goes to the bedroom after turning the lounge room TV off.

She turns on the smart tv in the bedroom, gets into bed, runs plex, logs in to her profile, goes into the TV series and the season number and position of continuation within Plex is completely different to where she left it in the lounge room seconds earlier, despite using the same profile.

Is there something I am missing as to why this gets out of sync or is it device specific?

Do you have more than one member of your household, who’s name begins with the letter J?
If not, then this behaviour is due to the fact that this person is actually using two different Plex user accounts.
You have one “managed” user in your Plex home, and then there is another full Plex account which has also been invited into your Plex Home.

Logging out is not necessary.
Next time, you go to the device and link it to your Plex account.
Upon restart of the device, it will show a list of 3 users. Now all she has to do is to select the same user account that she is selecting on the bedroom TV.

She uses the same managed account whenever she is inside the house between both devices.

The only time she uses a separate account is when she travels and takes her IPAD, but that account and use case is not related to this issue.

Well, this account has been added to your Plex Home. So it is perfectly possible to pick it accidentally on the user selection screen.

Whilst it is possible, I can confirm 100000% that’s not what is happening in this case.

That was my original thoughts when she first pointed it out. I thought she was crazy, but I watched her demonstrate it right in front of me and can vouch for her actions.

She used the same account on both devices, run up a show using her managed account on one device, stopped the show then exited plex. Went to the bedroom and fired up plex, went into managed account and series she just stopped in the lounge room, and it was in a completely different spot, different season of the same series.

There has to be something that is causing this in Plex, cause the same account is used across both devices. It is almost like Plex is considering both devices in the different rooms under the same managed profile as separate logins or something. They never ever keep sync between themselves.

Interestingly…

Anything she does under her managed profile in the bedroom is exactly as she leaves it.
Anything she does under her managed profile in the lounge room is exactly as she leaves it.

but both devices are never identical and the same using the same managed profile.

When she logs in at the lounge, is she using your Plex credentials or hers?

Hers, always hers.

That means she is using the account which was extra made for her travelling outside.

If she wanted to use the managed account, she’d have to perform “Switch User” after logging in and select the managed account.

ahh I see what your saying. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I have checked both devices and can confirm both home devices in the home are logged in using my account, and she simply switches between profiles under my account.

Have her switching back and forth between users anyway, when she arrives at the new playback device. This is supposed to force a resync of the player with the server.
(using “Switch User”, not by signing out and back in)

Also: never Pause. Always use Stop.
