Possible for ATV with Plexconnect to access a remote PMS server?

I have PMS installed and running on a Synology NAS that's at my friends house, and I will be moving out soon but leaving the NAS there. Is it possible for me to use my ATV from a remote location to access my media that's on the PMS from my friends house? I know I'm able to access it with the Plex client on my iPhone/iPad and the Plex Home Theater app on my computer. But what about from the ATV? Do I just change the DNS to the WAN IP of the NAS on which PMS is running?

Yes, don’t change anything apart from signing into MyPlex on both

You need a local version of PlexConnect or get it working remotely (changing the DNS to the wan ip might work). Once this happens then yes you can get the appletv to use a remote pms server.

Okay 2 different answers. I'm confused here. I am using ATV 3rd generation, unjailbroken with PlexConnect 0.3.6 installed on my Synology NAS. So do I need to configure anything inside of PlexConnect or just change the DNS IP on my ATV3 to point to the WAN IP of my Synology NAS? And do I need to open any ports on my router as well?

Depends on what you are moving. You said that PlexConnect is installed on your Synology, and it is staying at your friends house. Your appletv is moving and for the Trailers app to stay hijacked to Plex it needs to connect to PlexConnect. If you setup your current one to handle remote connections (I don’t think the default setup), then f00b4r is correct.

Otherwise you need to setup a local PlexConnect on your new network to keep Plex working on your appletv.

You need a local instance of PlexConnect, other configurations are not supported as they are downright dangerous unless you disable the PlexConnect DNS server and use a locked down alternative.

If you need more detail use the search as this has been answered multiple times before.

If you have a jailbreakable ATV you can run the PlexConnect local instance on that.

jchi, yes that is correct. The only thing I'm taking with me is my ATV, the Synology NAS is staying. So with that being said, I guess it won't work since I need a "local" instance of plexconnect running in order for this to work?

The only way I know to have your Apple TV work in a new location without having some kind of vpn equipment at the old and new site is to have a instance of plexconnect running at your new location. Once you setup a plexconnect host at the new location sign into myplex and point your atv at the plexconnect host at your new location then sign into myplex.

I have heard of users trying to open up ports and exposing their wan but if you do not know how to keep everything secure this is very unrecommended and very bad security wise.

Okay let me try that then, where can I download the latest plexconnect for OS X Mavericks?

as always -> github. see signature.

I'm confused on how github works, theres so many tabs and links. Where can I download the precompiled version for mac os x mavericks? All I see is source

Git man pages: http://git-man-page-generator.lokaltog.net/ :)

But seriously, easiest way to get it is by installing Xcode (and its command-line tools).

I dont want to have to install X-Code if its not absolutely necessary. My computer already has enough bloat and junk on it. Do I just go to the master tab and download the .zip file?

Type this at command prompt:

git

It should prompt you to install xcode OR install git. You can also download git directly from here:

http://git-scm.com/download/mac

Once you have git you can change directory to your desired location and git clone baa’s github. This is the best method to install plexconnect since you can then update for example if you wanted to clone plexconnect in applications:

cd /applications

git clone https://github.com/ibaa/plexconnect.git

Then to update:

Stop or unload plexconnect from launchctl (if loaded in launchctl)

sudo su

cd /applications/plexconnect

git pull

Okay so I got plexconnect installed and running on my macbook pro, and then i tried launching the trailers app on my ATV and it says trailers is unavailable. I set my DNS to 192.168.1.5 which points to plexconnect running on my macbook pro. Any ideas? I even messed with the settings.cfg and changed the IP of my PMS to the WAN IP of my Synology NAS and disabled the GDM.

Not sure why this is so difficult. Can someone please walk me through this to get this working :(.

All I want is to be able to access my media which is located on a remote Synology NAS (thats where I have PMS running on). I finally got a local instance of plexconnect running on my macbook pro, but I'm not sure what else to do here. I even tried to open ports 443 and 81 on my Synology NAS. Port 32400 is already opened.

Wish there was an easier way to access a remote PMS share. Plex Home Theater and Plex iOS apps have no problem of doing this.

You haven't mentioned certificates at all... dealt with that part yet?

Sorry, yes I installed trailers.cer and trailers.pem already and moved them into the proper location. One thing I'm confused about is, why do I need a local instance of plexconnect when I already have plexconnect installed on my Synology NAS. Why can't my ATV which is at my house connect to the plexconnect that is at my friends house? He already has PMS and plexconnect installed on the Synology NAS. I just want to set up my ATV to access the PMS that is located at his house. My ATV worked fine when I was living together there, but once I moved out and decided to change the DNS to point to the IP of the plexconnect running at his house, it just won't work.

I've read some other threads here with users who wish to do the same thing, but still can't get it to work. :(

The question I have is, since I have plexconnect already installed on my friends NAS and running perfectly fine, can I somehow point my ATV's DNS setting to it, instead of having to install a local version of plexconnect here at my house? I don't have any type or server that I can keep running 24/7 here. Just my laptop, and I sure as hell don't want to leave it on 24/7 just to have a local copy of plexconnect running so that I can use my ATV to access a remote PMS server.

Do I need to open port 53 (DNS port for plexconnect running on the synology NAS)?

As I told you in post #8 this is not possible unless you do as I informed you. Since you have a atv3 your only options at this time are as follows besides what I told you in post #8 to be easy and secure:

Run a local plexconnect instance at the new site and point you atv DNS to your plexconnect host at your new location then sign into myplex to access you syno located elsewhere.

The only way around this is what I told you in post #8 at this time such as VPN or opening ports which is a very bad idea if you don’t know what you are doing and would still require a instance of plexconnect running at the new site so what have you accomplished there? You cannot use a wan ip for you atv3 DNS.

What options does this leave you?

Wait for a atv3 jb.

Purchase a jb atv2 @200+ on iOS 5.3 and run plexconnect on the atv2 and sign into myplex.

wahlman, I did just that but it's still not working. Here's what I did.

installed the latest plexconnect onto my macbook pro using the git method, created the required certificates and copied those into the assets/certificates folder. Then I ran plexconnect throgh terminal.app. I then started up my ATV and went into the DNS settings and changed it to point at my plexconnect which is running on my macbook pro. Upon Launching the trailers app, it constantly spins and leaves me with a final message saying trailers unavailable.

Is you atv DNS pointed at your Mac Pro? Did you leave the setting.cfg default? Have you created new certs and trashed all old certs on your atv and Mac? Do you have a different device you could run plexconnect on to eliminate the current plexconnect host device/OS as being an issue? Is there an issue with your network? Have you posted a log file? How is you new network location designed from router to atv and Mac to router?

I edited my previous post also.
