Potential new Plex user, about remote access

I’m sharing a media library with some family members where we buy content to the collective which I host over having to pass physical media around (ie. Blu-ray). So far I’ve done it through smb shares where I host a VPN that only directs traffic to smb share through VPN.
But I’m thinking maybe this Plex thing is worth a try. But reading about remote access it appears you just connect to an IP:port and that’s it. I noted it said you had to be logged into the same account which means I need to create a universal account for sharing. But I am wondering what options you have to manage users, can I create usernames so I can monitor usage etc?

No.

Each user can have their own account. They’ll need a free account at plex.tv, same as you.

You decide what libraries to share with each individual.

Ok, that sounds cool. And transcoding can be disabled so it just serves the already encoded file?

No, it cannot. Plex will adapt to the capabilities of the used Plex Client software and the available bandwidth of the internet connection. For this it needs the ability to transcode in realtime.

Oh, that’s too bad. Then it’s not a viable solution for me. But thanks anyway.

Why not testing it anyway? It doesn’t cost anything for basic sharing and remote access.

I probably will, but just read that Kodi can do this, so i might just go for that instead.
