Pre-2002 photos appear wrong date on Plex Photo timeline

Hi. I have a PMS on my Synology NAS. As Plex Pass then thought experiment with relatively new Plex Photos service.
Issue: All images with creation date prior to 2002 (per NAS) appear on Plex Photos per upload date.

Context: On my NAS, all photos are saved under YYYY/YYYY-MM structure and all jpg images have accurate creation date metadata. All photos 2002+ appear accurately on Plex Photos timeline. All photos pre-2002 do not.

Question: What field on jpg files does Plex use to display date of photos on timeline?
Question: Is there any basis to explain why new photos, but not older photos, appear on accurate date on Plex Photos timeline?
