Am I able to do this? It doesn’t “see” my local server, only the online version. My roku sees it perfectly on the same router.
unclear what you mean by the ‘online version’ . do you mean it is accessing as if the server was remote? if so how are you determining that
Sorry, I did mean remote. I can tell because on my iPad, etc… It lets me pick the server, and on the Xbox it wouldn’t let me watch until I signed in, etc…
you have to sign in on xbox. that doesn’t mean the streams or its connection to your server is coming remotely. when you sign in, it gets your servers local IP of your server from your account which your account has because it is signed into the your server also.
To further clarify, we cannot do local network discovery through the app. The only way to get the IP addresses of your local servers to connect to them is to ask plex.tv what those addresses are, which is why the sign in requirement exists.
I don’t have a problem with that, just wanted to be sure I’m going direct instead of remotely.
there should be settings for quality over remote and quality over local. change the remote one really low and when you play something you should be able to see if the stream is remote because it will have really low quality

Here’s an idea: Rework the Plex app to store a cache of previously found local servers on disk on the XB1, and use that as a “seed” to discover new servers.
Solves the whole “online” thing too.

Wait, what? You can’t do local network discovery? I thought you were all working on this “Plex is down because xbox live or Plex.tv is down” issue. I hope this thread is about something different, and I just misunderstood, because we certainly should be able to use Plex on the local network when online services are down.

No, they can’t do local network discovery. Microsoft restricts 3rd Party apps from sniffing around the local network. Which is exactly what a client looking for a server would be doing.
However, the developers are looking at ways they can improve the functionality while still staying within the specified restrictions. Unfortunately, simply caching previous server results does not magically fix all connection, authorization, and restriction problems.
I appreciate the more complete (and more accurate) answer jmckee. I thought the developers were working on a solution. It’s still surprising that a 3rd party app can’t do local network discovery, but glad to hear a solution is being worked. I’m hopeful it’ll be in the next update.
And while I understand caching wouldn’t solve every problem, it seems like it would solve the most basic. I’m not certain, but I’m guessing a lot of Plex users have a static IP set up on their server. If that’s the case, wouldn’t caching the PMS IP solve the majority of local connection issues when plex.tv or xbox live is down?

It would and it wouldn’t. The biggest factor is the Xbox Live account requirement which requires internet and not so much not being able to find the server. Because it is currently required for Plex to use an Xbox Live account the developers are still looking at ways to access the server without an internet connection without breaking this requirement.
The downtime I have seen with Plex.tv is minuscule to the downtime I have seen with Xbox Live. Caching IP would be great for when Plex.tv is down but would do absolutely nothing for Xbox Live downtime/no internet as those two pretty much go hand in hand. That is where I normally have seen the bigger complaints from users. (I could always be wrong, but the posts do seem to be a lot more frequent when Xbox Live goes down)
