What happened really with the latest update?
429 means your server tried to download the codec too many times. You’ll need to check earlier in your logs to see if there was a failure and why. This is the symptom, you need to look earlier at the cause.
Please explain why you guys took out codecs of the initial PMS download? Can’t imagine that they require so much storage space…
I don’t have any specific information on that decision, but certain aspects of Plex can and is updated dynamically to ensure users have the latest versions. You can find a little more information on this at https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/203088737.
I noticed when AUTO is activated and then the subtitles would be on but once I get poor network quality in the area… the subtitle would stop working. I had to turn AUTO off and play one quality selection/direct quality to make the subtitle stay on.
I’ve stopped using Auto all together. It will start out all right then it will go down to SD 0.3 Mbps and stay there. This is on remote PC that has a spotty Verizon LTE connection. But I can put it on 3Mbps 720p and it is fine. What is even weirder is that I have a 20Mbps upload so I should be able to get 1080p no issue. In fact I can get 1080p on youtube, netflix, and amazon but for some reason it is like plex is being throttled.
When I use auto quality on iOS and Apple TV after a few seconds plex media server crashes. When I turn it off it plays fine. Something must be wrong with it

Can you provide the logs from PMS just before the crash?
not sure if i did correct. here is from iPad. i tested again and i dont think its the automatically quality, i think its the transcoding. but when i turn it off it plays fine

I wanted to look at the pms log to see what it was doing before the crash. The ipad log may have some other helpful info but knowing what pms was doing would be better.

Is this basically just to force our servers to transcode more?
I’ve been trying to set the playback settings to maximum quality on the phone app, but it seems that it automatically changes back to transcoding

see if these are the files you need
You have versbose logging turned on. Please leave this off unless asked to turn it on for troubleshooting purposes. This just generates a lot of information.
I don’t see any specific reason for the crash, however I do see a few issues that may be contributing.
1 - turn off verbose logging, maybe it’s crashing just generating these logs
2 - You have IPv6 enabled. I would recommend turning this off.
3- Your server lists 2 different IP’s and one is not in the private IP range. If you have 2 network devices, I would recommend disabling the one you don’t use.
Your iPad logs from the other day do show the AppleTV losing connection with the server. I also see similar things in your new PMS logs. This could be related to 3 above.
Make these changes and see if it helps. If not, please provide new PMS logs from just before the crash.
@Wpcrumbley I just heard from another employee that there is a bug in PMS regarding the Automatic Adjust Quality in the AppleTV and iOS app. So for now, if you are using these clients, do not use this feature.

That’s a totally different thing. This feature starts the playback already transcoding and allows the bitrate to be reduced or increased to match the internet speed of the user.
If you are trying to avoid transcoding in the first place, do not use this feature. The maximum quality setting only controls the bitrate. If the file is not compatible on the device, it will still have to be transcoded, no way around that. If you want to confirm, please start a new thread and provide details on your PMS, client, and the video you are trying to play.

Version 1.11.1 of Plex Media Server has now been released as beta. It includes the fix for the crashes associated with iOS and tvOS playback.
This function still lack the minimal limitation.
I have some videos that go to a too low quality to be usable (especially because of subtitles become unreadable)
I guess as you have the max quality then it should be easy to have a min quality
