[Preview] Try the new Auto Quality feature! Now on Web, Android, & iOS

New to Plex Pass and I’m rather disappointed with Plex. I want to cast from my Android to a chromecast TV but I’m constantly getting the “…server is not powerful enough to convert…” messages watching local 1080p H264 AC3 mkv files (and others).
My dedicated server is a NUC i5 @1.6GHz with 16gb ram and an SSD.
I have about 65-75Mbps wifi to the Galaxy S5 and I’ve enabled “Automatic Adjust Quality” with default settings.
My server transcoder settings are set to “Automatic”.

This has nothing to do with the new Auto quality feature. Can you start a new post and provide details on the CPU you have, and provide the logs from both PMS and from your phone after recreating the problem.

@simonx Sorry for the confusion. The article is correct. The selected setting is the starting quality.

We’re investigating the regression in 1.8.1-1.8.2 and will have a new release out soon.

I can confirm the issue/regression is still present in PMS 1.8.4 (no mention on the release notes but I hoped it was stealth-fixed :smile: )

1.9.0 should be coming to Plex Pass imminently

woo! with hw transcoding built in from now on?

@Curun
No spoilers.

@simonx
We just made a configuration change – could you restart PMS and see if Auto Quality works?

Seems it’s working now :wink:
Thanks!

This is great! I have to check into it. I’ve been holding off, but will test right away.

Great news- appreciate Plex looking into the issue.

Unfortunately we all use Managed Users so our individual watched status are kept seperate- so no Auto Adjust for us :frowning:

Hi,
It seems that the auto quality is not fully compatible with external subtitles (.srt) on plex web : at beginning subtitles are shown but, for any reason, disappear quite quickly.

I have no issue when I select a constant video quality.

Interesting. Let me try to recreate this issue.

No issues my end on the iOS iPhone… Even using the cable connected to the TV its nice to see quality go lower auto and then back to HD :slight_smile: when signal picks up

Is there any way to make this as default for users? because even if it’s enabled on the server, user need to go to playback setting when they start playing something and change the quality to Auto.

I have been using this feature a lot this past few weeks, mostly on the web player.

It is impressive, I have been getting seamless playback while trasncoding high bit rate 1080p video down to low bit rate 720p and even lower bitrate SD, all in the same video.

This is a great step forward while using ■■■■■■ public wifi networks or unstable internet connections. It is nearly as good a adaptive bitrate streaming via an m3u playlist (netflix) but not quite as good yet.

I still encounter videos that just stop and will not resume, more than ever before. sometimes a video is playing back perfectly well, I pause it to take a leak, come back and it wont resume, I have to restart the browser to get it playing again. IN some cases I have to start the TV too.

Scrubbing forward or back 10 seconds really upsets the process while it is transcoding. If i want to go back 30 seconds to rewatch something, it usually causes the video to become unplayable until I restart the browser or TV app.

This is something that has got worse in the past few months, it may or may not have something to do with the adaptive transcoding, I´m not sure.

I wish there was a place where we could give direct feedback to the developers at Plex and try to help them.

This is that place. Start a new thread in the most appropriate section (Server/client, etc). Recreate an issue one at a time and provide us logs from the server and client from the time the issue occurred. That would be a great start.

I don’t know what happened but the last update I made broke AppleTV playback. It now gives error saying that the codec couldn’t found or downloaded while it did play the same files before. Here is the output of mkvinfo for the file:

My Plex media server is running under FreeNas 11 ( Intel Atom C2750 ) and version is 1.9.5.4339.

Plex media player on AppleTV is latest available.
I also found these errors in logs:

When I tried the link on the browser it says:

<Response code="429" status="Limit of devices using codec exceeded"/>

What happened really with the latest update?

429 means your server tried to download the codec too many times. You’ll need to check earlier in your logs to see if there was a failure and why. This is the symptom, you need to look earlier at the cause.

So you say it may be for example timed out in earlier attempts. My server is heavily downloading for a while… It may be the cause for timeouts. But is this a temporary thing? What happens if I try again for example right now?

Just to inform other users who was stumped like me, after stopping download queue and trying playback again, it worked… :wink:

As far as I see it downloaded libdca, libaac and libx264 libraries from plex server. I thought that when we install from package this libraries are already installed but it seems this is not the case and it downloads the libraries from plex servers. :o

Please explain why you guys took out codecs of the initial PMS download? Can’t imagine that they require so much storage space…

Can i post here?..
