My kids use an old MacBook for watching Plex. Both because of ease of use for them, and because of the age of the computer (which can’t run the newer Plex app) they use the older Plex Media Player.
Recently, an update notification popped up to update to version 2.42. When I attempted to run the update, I got this error message during the verification step:
“Unable to create symlink /Applications/Plex Media Player.app.new/Contents/Frameworks/QtCore.framework/QtCore to Versions/Current/QtCore
details: File exists”
I did some forum searching and people with a similar issue (but a different file) had suggested removing the offending file and running the update again. When I tried that, Plex wouldn’t launch at all, so I put the file back.
Others suggested deleting the app entirely and reinstalling it…however, I don’t know where you can still download the older Plex Media Player as the downloads page only lists the newer Plex app (which I can’t run).
So now I’m at a loss as to what to do to fix the problem.
After I’d posted this question, I tried copying the app from one computer to another and that seemed to work and fixed the problem. But I’m going to hold on to that link in case I need it in the future!
I use Time Machine on my server as well as my main computer. However, the laptop that was having the problem is a really old model MacBook that used to be my wife’s but now is only used by my kids, primarily for Plex and Netflix. It has almost nothing on it so I don’t bother backing it up.
