Problem with PSG subtitles and Synology DS218+

Server Version#: Version 1.16.3.1433
Player Version#: iOS 5.8 App

I’ve the hardware transcoding enabled and the 64 bits version installed.

When I activate the PSG subtitles in a BluRay movie the Synology CPU goes around 50-70% but the playback is buffering all the time. That does not happen with SRT subtitles, any idea?

Thanks!

PGS (and VOBSUB) subtitles are pixel-based.
Most clients cannot display these on their own, so they ask the server to burn them into the video picture.
However, burning in subtitles is not hardware-accelerated, so the speed of the main CPU in your NAS is the determining factor here.
And Synology NAS’s are not exactly at the top of the speed pyramid, CPU-wise.

To cope with this, you can do one of these:

  • turn off PGS subtitles
  • convert PGS subtitles into SRT format
  • prepare your media before adding them to Plex and burn in the subtitles during the course
  • only use client types which can handle PGS and VOBSUB (there are only a few, like PMP and nVidia Shield)
  • use a Plex server machine with a potent CPU

Thanks! Do you know if it’s possible to disable PSG subtitles so clients cannot choose them?

Not in Plex. You’d have to remux your files to remove them.
