Problems reading some mp4 files

I download many video files from on-line sources.

Almost always, I download them to the “highest resolution” with so often in 1080. I am also downloading them as MP4 format videos.

Almost always, it works perfectly, and I can read them on my TVs using the PLEX Player. But, the past few days, it is NOT working. When I click on the files outside of PLEX they play fine, but when I load them into PLEX and attempt to play them on a TV using the PLEX Player, they do not work. I get a message that says:

“Cannot convert this item. Implementation for video decoder ‘av1’ not found.”

Other videos from the same source, and from the same channel, tend to work, but not all.
What is causing the problem? Is there a way to fix this?

I suspect I might download them instead as MKV format, but I would prefer to have them all in MP4.

Please advise. Thank you.

Plex has no support for the AV1 codec.

So, is it normal that two MP4 videos, both downloaded from the same YouTube channel, would require different codecs? Several just downloaded yesterday seem to require the av1 codec, but all others downloaded in the past do not. This seems to point to a problem in my PLEX Media Player.

Am I wrong? Please advise.

MP4 is just a container. It can contain different video and audio codecs.
In the past. Google/Youtube has used the H.264 codec.
Since both H.264 and H.265 require the payment of royalties, they developed their own codec AV1, which is what they use on Youtube on more and more videos.
