NOTE: I am re-posting this in Plex Media Server since I didn’t get much help to my query in Live TV & DVR. My issue seems to be a server issue.
Recently upgraded my hardware and did a clean install of Windows 11 (24H2) along with other software including plex. Everything seems to be working fine with plex except for two things: commercial skip is not working and scheduled tasks run for hours and never seem to complete.
Before the update and install of Win11 and plex, the commercial skip worked fine and honestly I never really paid attention to how long the scheduled tasks took. On the new setup I had the scheduled tasks set to run from 00:00 to 03:00 and they were not finishing. I changed to time to 18:00 to 23:00 to see if it would complete. It did not. My library is not terribly large - probably less than 500 movies, maybe 700 TV episodes (DVD Rips), and about 250 LiveTV episodes. From what I can gather the commercial skip happens during a scheduled task. I don’t know if that specific task is not completing or if it is failing. FWIW, the Intro Skip and Credits Skip work fine.
EDIT: After removing some libraries that don’t really get used (music, pictures, etc) I’ve gotten the scheduled tasks to run in a few minutes instead of hours. Also, I’ve managed to get commercial skip to partially work. I think I changed Ad Detection from “For all items” to “For recorded items” and now it partially works.
If I use the plex app on my PC it works fine with any account. If I log in to plex with the admin account on any TV (Chromecast on a Visio or 2x Hisense (Google TV)) it works fine. If I log in with any other account on any TV the commercial skip does not work. All programs play fine from any account. The commercial skip worked fine on the old setup with any account on any TV.
I checked settings until I’m blue in the face and I cannot seem to find anything to fix this. Is there a privilege setting somewhere that I am missing? I could really use some help getting this working again!
Analyzing files for commercials is not a fast process, it takes time. With 3 or 5 hours a night, it can still take several days for it to complete. Also, if you have other tasks enabled like thumbnail generation, those tasks time too. Just watch your activities during the scheduled tasks and as long as it’s still running, you just have to wait.
Thanks for your input @MovieFan . If you read my (admittedly long) message in its entirety you’ll note that I got the tasks to run much faster - completing now in minutes instead of hours. The problem is that commercial skip works fine locally (on the PC) for any account and on any TV with the admin account but not on any TV with any account other than the admin account.
I just checked my android phone and it works with both admin and normal accounts. This is just plain weird. Anybody else have any clues?
Last night I took a look at the log files to see if I could get a more accurate gauge of how long the tasks were taking. the log folder was a mess, containing logs from over 6 months ago so I dumped the whole folder. I’ll look again after the tasks run today.
As far as what I’m testing on:
Chromecast Puck connected to a Visio M60D
Visio M60D (2016 model, SLOW as molasses, hence the Chromecast)
Hisense 65U8G (2021)
Hisense 55U7N (2024)
Samsung S23 phone
My PC (connected to the 55U7N)
On each device, other than my PC, if I log in with the plex admin account, commercial skip works just fine. If I log in with any user account the commercial skip does not work. On my PC commercial skip works no matter which plex account I log in with.
That’s what I don’t get - all of these devices are essentially Android based, except for my PC. They all work fine with the plex admin account so the commercial skip task is working and detecting the commercials. But for whatever reason the regular user accounts on these devices will not show the Skip Ads button. It DOES show the Skip Intro and Skip Credits buttons on any account.
I have been experiencing the same exact behavior. I first noticed it when attempting to watch a recorded show via Plex on an Apple TV 4K as any user OTHER than the Plex admin. The Plex admin account continues to work on all platforms.
Up until a week or so ago, it was working for all users (admin or otherwise) while using the Plex iOS or macOS app, as well as the web client. Now, all of these platforms are affected and the only user that can skip commercials is the Plex admin. regardless of client platform. Skipping of intros/credits has continued to be unaffected.

Still don’t have a clue what the heck is going on. I just created a new test account thinking that maybe the other accounts are corrupt or something. Having the same problem with a newly created account.
First was commercial detection which seems resolved.
Second is Plex Home accounts not displaying the Skip Ads button.
Testing with Android client 2025.20 it seems to present the issue when using server versions after 1.41.7.9823. In this thread and others on the same topic no one has provided logs so their is little for developers to work with.
