Hi everyone, I’ve been using Plex for 10 years and only recently discovered Plexamp. So I subscribed to Plex Pass so that all the members of my family living under one roof could benefit from its advantages: watching and listening outside the home network and downloading. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to activate all these new features, even for myself. I’d appreciate any advice. Of course, I contacted technical support, and they told me to log out and log back in using my email and password, and that everything would work, but it hasn’t.
I look forward to your replies, thank you, and have a good day.
Have you added any of your family members to you Plex Home? You’ll want to have them create a plex account and then you can invite them to your server and share content with them
What exactly are you missing?
What does not show up?
Is it certain menu items?
Or is it the ability to access your Plex server from outside your home in general?
Do you use a VPN?
Yes, I asked my daughters to test it outside our network. The result: playback outside the home works well for everyone.
There’s literally no button to download anything. There is a download page in our profiles, but it simply tells us to download content and then we can play it offline. There’s no feature to add content by selecting items or even a simple action like tapping the three dots next to a song or video.
Downloads require the downloading user to have a Plex Pass. This is not covered by the server owner having a Plex Pass.
At least for video content. (I’m actually not sure if this is the same in Plexamp.)
That being said, downloads should work if the shared user is currently logged in as a managed user.
Downloads might not start if the remote client is on a mobile network, instead of a WiFi network. There is a separate app preference, whether downloads shall work over mobiel networks (due to data volume caps etc.)
You cannot directly say that a “Plex Pass includes x additional people”. This is an over-simplification which will lead to wrong conclusions.
The number of managed users that you can create is 14.
If you invite other full plex.tv user accounts into your Plex Home, each one reduces this number further.
If you include yourself (i.e. the server owner), then the maximum number of people within a Plex Home is 15. That is where the number 15 comes from.
But that clarification aside:
If your family is continuing to use the managed user accounts that you apparently gave them already years ago, they should be able to use the benefits of your Plex Pass.
If they however switch to the full plex.tv user accounts that you already created, they won’t be able to use all the benefits. Among those features that they won’t be able to use is Downloads.
So, log in on their mobile devices using your own Plex credentials. Then use “Switch User” to change to their respective managed user account.
In order for any user to use Downloads from your server, you need to explicitly allow them.
Go here https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/plex-home
and click on each of your family members.
Switch to the Restrictions tab, and ensure that Downloads are allowed for each of them.
If you make changes there, you should afterwards perform Switch User back and forth on each client device. This should ensure that the changes are correctly transmitted to the client devices.
Hi, I’ve taken several screenshots. The first two show the apps I use on my iPhone. The next three show the apps I use on my late-2015 iMac (running Monterey 12.7.6—a new M6 iMac is arriving in a week or so) to manage the Plex Media Server on my WD PR4100. The next four screenshots demonstrate that I am now able to download a movie or TV series to my iPhone. The following six show what I see in the User Menu > Settings > Downloads and User Menu > Downloads sections. In that last window, you can see what happens when I click on Settings (13th screenshot). The 14th shows what happens when I click “Choose a library.” In the 15th, I simply end up back on the page for the selected library; nothing changes, and there is no button prompting me to select a file to download. Finally, the last three screenshots show a FLAC file where there is no download button anywhere. Just a reminder: all these screenshots were taken on my personal iPhone within my Plex account. Does all this make sense to you? So far, I can’t figure out where to enable the download option for myself (or how to remove a restriction).
The admin should always be able to download, but only certain apps allow them. Plexamp should be one of them. Are you logged into your account as the admin, or did you make a managed user under your anme and use that?
For your other managed users and full-users-invited-to-home users, you must allow that in their profile in your home.
1 - Click Plex Home in the left-hand menu of settings in a browser.
2 - Click the name of the user you want to allow downloads.
3 - Click Restrictions along the top.
4 - Check this setting to see if you allow downloads.
Once we know that your managed user has access, then we can focus on one app at a time to check download capabilities.
I looked at your screenshots, and I am still confused on exactly WHICH app you are unable to download media on. You said you can on your iphone, and I see you can download the diary of a wimpy kid. So does this appear to be an issue in Plexamp only?
I see you successfully downloading a video on the mobile app.
I recognize the Plex web app, which doesn’t support downloads.
I also recognize the mobile app, where you were missing a download button on music content.
About music: the Plex app for mobile is a complete rewrite. When work began on it, it was not planned to have support for music in it at all. That decision was later changed. What you see now are the fruits of the initial work in getting music support back into the app. Apparently support for downloading music is still missing. I propose you use Plexamp for music instead.
Thanks, guys. I was so focused on figuring out how to fix a problem that I completely forgot to check out Plexamp. It’s a new app for me. I found out about it by chance: I asked Google’s AI a question about iTunes, and instead of making me spend money on a player that was far more powerful than an iPod or iPhone, it simply suggested I try Plexamp. Anyway, I took a look; Plex handles movies and series, so what better way to manage music… than Plexamp? Our conversation helped me look at things from a different angle—basically, thanks for asking me for those Plexamp screenshots. Hahaha.
