Problems with streaming 4k to LG OLED55C9

So I’ve been having some problems with straming 4k to my TV, both buffering and so much micro stuttering that the video pretty much is in slow-mo. I’ve been googling for a while and tried everything I could find with no real result. I am now looking for more tips, dont really know what information you guys need so just tell me and I’ll do my best to provide it!

Is the video transcoding?

  1. Play the video without subtitles.
  2. Check playback status in Plex Dashboard -> Now Playing.

What is displayed?

Ideally, you want both video and audio to direct play or direct stream. Transcoding 4K video requires a powerful CPU. Transcoding audio is not compute intensive, but can cause problems if subtitles are enabled.

You definitely want to avoid transcoding HDR video. Plex transcodes all video to H.264, so any HDR information is lost. Also, Plex performs no HDR to SDR tonemapping, so transcoded HDR video usually appears to have washed out colors.

If the video is transcoding:

Be aware of the limitations of the LG Plex client:

  • Enabling image based subtitles, PGS & VOBSUB, forces a video transcode.
  • If the audio is transcoding, enabling text subtitles, SRT, forces a video transcode.

Your TV will direct play AC3, EAC3, dts, and dts-HD audio. TrueHD audio will transcode.

Movies with TrueHD audio also include an AC3 version of the audio. Choose the AC3 version when using the LG Plex client.

The bottom line is, when viewing 4K or HDR video using the Plex LG app:

  • Never enable PGS or VOBSUB subtitles, as this forces a video transcode.
  • If using SRT subtitles, choose an audio format that direct plays (not TrueHD), to avoid a video transcode.

Oh, it actually was as simple as turning off subtitles! Thank you verry much, kind of sucks tho, I really like subtitles. I’m guessing there’s no workaround to have subtitles without causing all these problems?
