Provide option for Grant Access to bypass Parental Controls

Currently it’s difficult to grant exceptions to parental restrictions. I set up a managed user (young child), and expected to be able to grant them access to a PG-13 film.

However if you look at this Plex support link it says:

Note: that if you are restricting a user via preset Restriction Profile or custom share restrictions, items meeting the restriction will not be able to be seen by the shared account. For example if a server admin tries to share a playlist that contains an R rated movie to user that can only view G and PG rated content, the R movie will not be seen in the playlist by that shared user.

I suggest changing this or adding additional functionality so specific grant access to managed users will bypass the content restriction.

Perhaps a tick box in the grant access window that allows this kind of bypass?

Please give parents the ability to make exceptions for their children as currently we have to give them access to another account or unrestricted their account which can show other content not suitable for them.

Are you trying to just make exceptions for single films?

If so you can do this, but not using the predefined profiles. You will have to set the restrictions manually and then use Sharing Labels for things you want to make exceptions for.

Here is an example.

Create a Sharing Label on the movies you want to make exceptions for:

Then under your managed user, make sure you don’t have a restriction profile enabled, and then manually restrict the ratings you want and include the label too.

This should then allow you to give access to specific items by assigning it this label.

Hi, thank you very much for the guide. I’ve just set that up now.

You can close my request if you want, but might I perhaps suggest if this was automatic via grant access while using the predefined profiles then it might be a bit more accessible to Plex admins?

In the mean time updating the shared-media article with this information in the “Grant Access to single items from Mobile” would also be great!
