The Plex app for my PS3 is forcing AC3 5.1 when the option is ticked in the settings that I have a compatible receiver, the consequence of this is that AC3 2.0 soundtracks will only ever play from front left and right channels as my processor believes it's getting full surround sound and won't (quite rightly) allow me to use ProLogicII etc to process the track into surround.
Surely the PS3 app when set to allow Direct Stream should do just that.....? It appears as though it's somewhere in the middle....sort of transcoding but not quite...
Is this something others have experienced?
Thanks.
Oh interesting. Thank you for describing it well. I appreciate the context. I'll be looking into the multichannel handling on the PS3 in the near future. I'll look into this directly.
Good luck with that, I think the Netflix app on PS4 had the same problem for a long time. iirc, the PS3 one did too but that was probably several years ago. It's probably a different app platform as I get the impression Sony's been through at least a half dozen, but I wouldn't be surprised if something funky was going on at the driver/codec level.
Thanks Androvsky, did they sort it in the PS3 Netflix app? And sorry for the reply delay!
I have just noticed also the in the latest release notes for the Plex Media Server software there is a note regarding PS3/4 audio transcoding - fingers crossed!
Hopefully the feedback I gave helped in some small way mseeley ;-)
Cheers!
I've been experiencing this with the PS4 app as well.

Hopefully the new update deals with it. I'm installing now and will have a play.
Thought I would mention this. It seems to not handle mono tracks well. I watched National Lampoons Vacation which has a DTS mono track, and it output no audio. I had to turn off 5.1 in the Plex settings to get plex to play the mono audio.
