PS3 Navigation gets slower over time (since v2.4.19) - NOT RESOLVED YET

Yeah, just tried it on a friend’s PS3 and it was extremely slow and unreliable. Pulled out my iPad and it worked flawlessly.

Yes, same thing for me with version 2.5.7 and the version ??? (it’s not indicated anymore) that seems to be installed since many 2-3 weeks.

Unfortunately, the problem is always present and make it almost unusable. If I’ve to navigate through the menus, it’s incredibly slow. I’m using the Plex app.

With PS3 media server in DLNA, no problem at all. I’m connected with Cat5e directly in my router and the computer running plex also connected with Cat5e.

This issue is very annoying and last since many a lot of months. Any update about this?

@widlan Unfortunately there seems to be multiple topics on this issue with no headway in resolution at-least that’s how it appears to the public currently.

@mattseeley After reading through multiple posts in regard to the ps3/ps4 App issue I was curious If anything is being done by you or the plex staff? I can tell allot of users are agitated by the issue and are at post riot break out pitch fork phase. XD Ahem I was curious to see what sort of issues you guys might be facing, or if it were possible in getting some sort of statement to the public about the plexstation app of death?

Anything new? Plex really sucks and it was wonderful at first. Even my friends noticed how bad it works and we often had to watch videos on PC, using media player classic, instead of watching on my big ass TV.

I’m connected with cat6 directly to the router and have gigabit Ethernet. Mediaserver is on synology ds 214play.

Also play, pause and other buttons stopped working in plex on my remote. Works everywhere else.

After 18 minutes of continuous trying I still did not manage to play the next episode of a TV show.

it bothers me that this thread is marked as answered because this is not fixed and plex is unusable on my PS3. I have to know exactly what I want to watch and search it as trying to navigate the menus on my ps3 is pure hell. Slow isnt even an adequate description, i lack the proper words… C’mon plex, this issue has been relevant for months, fix it.

I have tried to undo that but cannot work out how :((

There are lots of Plex issues currently, the team seems overwhelmed. Also, for PS3 there seems to be only one developer? And the app is the same as for PS4. Something that is obviously not working. I personally completely gave up on it and I ordered a Roku.

I had the same type of things happen … it was related to heat. Stick a fan on it and see if it gets better. Leave the playstation off all night. turn it on and play whatever makes it break. Time how long it takes. Reboot the PS and do it again. See if the time it takes to get angry is shorter than the first time. Power it off for say half an hour and do it again. Did it work for longer than the reboot? Let me know how it goes.

Honestly, the app is no longer in a working state at all. I can’t even play videos any more, and if you try to navigate to a show or anything at all really it will take like 10 minutes getting there (and probably the app will completely freeze somewhere on the way anyway).

What is really frustrating is that the app used to work. Well it was sluggish but it nevertheless worked. And after Sonys latest PS3 update it actually got a lot better. I actually stress tested the app then, just to see if it had improved and it had. It worked better than ever! Then just days after this fact Plex pushes an (completely silent, hidden, no changelog, no anouncement in forum) update which completely killed the app. Now it does not work at all. And no explanation from Plex as to why they did this. Surely this can’t be entirely Sony’s fault when the app worked just fine before the latest update.

And now it has been weeks. They have not even reverted the update. And I am now forced to search for alternatives to the PS3 app, which I depended a bit on. I had quite a bit of confidence in Plex but I must say it took some dent with this. I just can’t believe how they are handling this.

Plex is now a week away from being retired by myself.

I only use it to stream through my wired connection to the PS3 in the front room so i dont have to copy to usb and such. Due to all the issues with it, having to reboot system after an episode of a 20 minute show then waiting 10 minutes for it to load up through the menus… i dont have this much time to waste.

I know its probably unorthodox, but what alternatives do i have to stream from PC to the PS3 which works well. I know it probably wont be as pretty as plex just upset that i paid for it now.

As the Plex server has such good support for transcoding, etc I’d recommend enabling DLNA on the plex server and using the native media player on the PS3 to play videos. Not the most friendly way of browsing to films, etc. but will certainly work until (hopefully) the Plex app for PS3 gets better.

An alternative (which I opted for) is to buy a Roku and use that for streaming. This made a noticable impact on my power bill becuase the Roku vs PS3 power consumption is massively different!

Didnt think of using the normal media player for it, I may have to do this as its killing me having to wait ages to watch an episode of a tv show.

Abandoned the PS3, and move to Fire TV box with Plex. Much happier

I fully appreciate that just getting a new device is not feasible for most users, but getting a more modern device is most likely your best bet and would give you a drastically better plex experience.

I think most of us are Plex users are here because of the first bullet on the feature page “Enjoy your videos, movies, TV shows, music and photos anytime, anywhere.” Whatever we had plugged into the TV, we could continue just continue using it the way we wanted with what ever way our media systems work.

So for me, continued efforts to fix this would be greatly appreciated so I don’t have to continue trying to explaining to my wife and children why everything they want to do (games, netflix, hulu, amazon, etc) works on this TV without changing inputs or anything except this Plex thing I set up.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear, we have no plans to abandon the PS3, we have been working on fixing this issue and will continue to improve it,
I just wanted to set the expectation that PS3 will have a degraded experiance because of it’s technical/platform limitations.

Please see this announcement for detail:

Thanks for that! Sorry my frustration came through a little strong there, that sounds like a solid plan and I appreciate the short term relief and the long term solutions.

I don’t think it did, at least I didn’t see it that way  and it’s understandable given the current state of the PS3 app.

We think so too, hopefully it goes mostly as planned.
