PS4 in-app "recommended" H.264 level conflicts with documentation; playback issues

The PS4 app is recommending 5.1 for the H.264 level, but the documentation here says the maximum is 4.1

Which is intended to be correct?

  • If it’s 4.1, the app needs to be updated to not recommend 5.1.

  • If it’s 5.1, there’s a playback issue with some of my media playing way too fast (like 30x speed). The media in question was encoded by Handbrake using the “Animation” tune, so it bumped ref frames to 6 and the encoder level to 5.1. I think that’s the issue, but if there’s additional info I can provide on the encoding, please let me know.

Edit: “tune”, not preset. Also added secondary version line from “About” page.

4.2 for PS4
5.2 for PS4 Pro mp4.

Also if you changed the framerate with handbrake this can also cause this issue if your ripping a dvd you should choose constant framerate not variable.

Thanks; I’ll do some re-encodes when I get home to test this out. I do leave that setting on “original” for everything regardless of source, so maybe in these instances the source was variable.

So I re-encoded the same source file in the following ways:

  • Animation tune with a constant frame rate
  • Film tune with a variable frame rate

The latter results in a 4.0 profile and plays without issue, while the former results in a 5.0 profile and has the playback skipping issue.

Are there more specific encoding settings I can try to narrow this down? I don’t mind getting down and dirty with ffmpeg CLI switches; handbrake is just way easier.

Bump as I’m still hitting this issue today.

The files in question are MKV, so they’re being Direct Streamed. Maybe there’s an issue with that? I can try putting the files on a USB drive and verifying they play normally in the native video player if that would help.
