PS4 playing MKV files

I have MKV files stored on a Synology NAS and PS4 connected through a LAN. When I playback on my Plex player on my PS4 it stutters. Plays for a second and then pauses. However, my Mac mini has no problem playing it on the same LAN network. Any suggestions?

If these are BluRay ripped to MKV you may suffer performance issues if you have set your H.264 Level above 4.0. PS4 will not direct play a MKV. Your best scenario is direct stream of the video. What does the server say under Now Playing?

Thanks. They are BluRay ripped. I have transcoded the MKV’s to a lower quality so that they can be easily streamed. Guess this will have to be the same for the PS4. Is this a PS4 limitation? Are there any plans to allow MKV playback in the future?

Curious to know as well

It’s a limitation of what Sony 's platform allows Plex to do

Just saw this thread. Have you tried using the DLNA feature? I’m having the same issue but they play flawless via the DLNA feature but I feel like the quality takes a minor hit but I could be wrong.

Quality should be the same or better, depending on if Plex direct streams or transcodes the file. DLNA has a larger range of codec/container support, so less transcoding.

PS4 only supports to play MKV files that meet the following standard:
Video: H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level4.2
– Audio: MP3, AAC LC, AC-3 (Dolby Digital)
If the MKV files does not comply with this standard, Plex will transcode the file for you. However, as the transcoding process is very CPU intensive, if you don’t have more RAM or a faster CPU, the playback process will be very laggy, it is idea for you to use a third-party video conversion app to convert unsupported MKV to PS4 readable MKV file formats, then stream it PS4 via Plex Media Server.

That is true of the native video player + DLNA, not what’s available for Plex’s app.
