Just tried watching the first episode of Better Call Saul through the Plex app on my PS4 and I was very disappointed with the amount of buffering required.
I was running at the recommended 8 Mbps and it started buffering at ~5 minutes, then I had to "O" out back to the menu and resume playback on the show. Then it happened again at about the ~30 minute mark.
Have no issues with Netflix, streaming other content and online games on my PS4, so I assume it's the Plex connectivity.
Anyone have any recommended settings or networking solutions they can share that helps with this?
Edit: Here's the file information if anyone is curious.
Well what hardware are you using to run the plex server ? your computer has to transcode any file that does not fall under direct play rules depending on speed or if its nas can cause alot of buffering. Example my setup im using 20mbps and even on a 10gig bluray mkv no buffering my computer i use for plex is a i7 930@4.2ghz with 6gigs of dd3 in tripple channel not exactly newest hardware but decent enugh for plex. I see in your post its a mkv that means it might be needing to transcode and could be why its buffering.
I'm running Plex server on my gaming desktop - so it should have enough horsepower to encode a 720p video file for the PS4 to access.
My system is wired to my router which then goes into a 250 Mbps rated powerline ethernet connection to a switch in my living room that my PS4 is on. Actual speed tests on the line in my living room clocks it around 20-25 Mbps, so it's more than enough to stream 8 Mbps quality media.
Again, I have no issues playing games or watching Netflix/YouTube/NHL Game Center on my PS4, so I know the connection to the net is good for HD content.

Desktop specs:
Windows 8.1 Pro
Intel Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz
16GB DDR3 RAM
Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 4GB
yea should be fast enugh plex is not really same as the streaming services you are serving to your ps4 from your pc running the plex server where the others get it directly off the internet. Might try playing some files then watch your computers cpu usage.
I have the same issue, Have an i7 Alienware PC 16Gb Ram but every time I watch a film it buffers at 45 minutes and the only way to continue to watch the film is to exit the film and then resume which will then last for another 45 minutes. I have no problem streaming from the Xbox one so it must be an issue with the PS4 app?
Watched a movie, no buffering. Watched an episode of a 20 minute show and got "Buffering..." at about 15 min mark. Also, didn't resolve itself and got an error "There was a problem playing the video... yadda yadda".
Really wish there was a sure fire way to fix this issue. I turned down the bitrate to 4 Mbps already, and thought it worked after watching the movie successfully, but I guess it didn't do it.
I've the same problem, my PC is not remotely as good as Case909, howerver I can watch movies at 4mbps without problems. I've an AMD 6 core and 4gb Ram and I always used the PlayStation Media Server without problems on my PS3 at full HD, the thing with 4mbps is that the lost quality is notorious. I don't think it's a hardware issue... at least not from the PC.
Ok so im getting numerous complaints that there is buffering issue for ps3 and ps4 app i have even adjusted speed settings it should not have a problem i am running 50mbps other than that i love this app you guys should have released it sooner lol
Well, I continue to experience the issues intermittently. Hopefully someone at Plex is doing testing on their end to see if they can fix this with a patch. I'm remaining hopeful...
Will be checking this thread daily, so if anyone has any advice, complaints or comments, let's keep the thread going so the Plex team can hear us.
im sure they are working on a fix but hard to narrow it down when it does not affect every user, like example i have never had a buffering issue watched 50+ movie/tv shows problem free.
I just started getting this tonight! I watched Better Call Saul easily yesterday and now today trying to watch Girls it keeps buffering, tried Brooklyn 99, buffering. What the hell?!
dmon not sure but try raising the memory plex can use i have mine set to 3gigs and no buffering issues maybe that can fix others problems you find the option in settings under server have to click advance to see it.

Not sure where to find that option. Looking under Server options with Show Advanced and not seeing where to increase ram usage. :(
yea might play with differnt numbers and see if it makes a differnce seems like higher the buffer more of a file can be transcoded and held into memory but im not 100% sure i just know i dont have any problems.
I've got big movies, a couple @ 30mbit, most between 10-20mbit video mkvs. All 1080p.
My plex server has 4071 cpumark. (amd A8) on a gigabit lan.
PS3 and PS4 wire connected.
PS3 begins buffering on any video when pushing 12mbit in PS Plex app.
PS4 doesn't buffer. I've got my PS Plex app set to 20mbit
Watching a 30mbit video, plex server has to downcode to match the PS4 20mbit setting. So Plex server is humming at around 80% cpu. No buffering on PS4.
Hey guys, im here because i can barely get any files to play on my ps4’s plex app at all. It just says buffering for a minute then I get an error saying there was a problem playing this item.
I have pms running on a synology DS413+ which is obviously not the most powerfull setup for it but I have no problems streaming to my samsung tv’s plex app or my desktops plex client.
I just tried out the PS4 Plex app today and I get buffering every minute or so on every 1080p mkv file I've tried. SD mkv files from DVDs play fine. My server is on a Mac running 0.9.11.7 (says up to date when click check for update) and the PS4 is wired to the home network. Not a huge deal for me since I usually watch my local files in another room on a Chromebox running Kodi or an Oppo 103D, but I thought this would be a nice option to have for my kids to watch stuff in another room on the PS4. I have a Amazon Firestick and a Chomecast laying around that I'm going to try out to see if the result is the same.
