I’m currently running Plex on the PS4 with my QNAP TS-669 (Intel atom processor)
Plex was running flawlessly for me until a recent Plex PS4 update occured (2.4.24). Now all that happens on movies (.mkv) is buffering every 5-10 seconds, making my media unwatchable. I’ve actually had to use my QNAP’s DLNA and PS4’s new media server app, which works flawlessly.
QNAP PMS version:
Tried 0.9.12.8 and then upgraded to 0.9.12.12 but still buffering QNAP PS4 version:
2.4.24 with PS4 OS 1.17 Media:
All my movies. Range from 5GB to 15GB. .MKV f********ormat.
Surprisingly, TV shows do not do this at all. 1GB average TV show. .MKV format Audio:
I’ve tried it with AC3 on and off. No difference. (It’s usually on) Video:
Local Quality: 8mpbs 1080p. It works on 1.5mbps, which kills the quality.
Allow Direct Play: Tried both on and off. (It’s usually on)
Allow Direct Stream: Tried both on and off. (It’s usually on) Network:
Internal network is Gigabit all through.
I think the issue trickles down to the PS4 version of Plex and I wish there was someway to revert back but it doesn’t look like it?
I can confirm this is a problem for me as well. Playback via Plex on PS4 transcodes the audio and video of HD content despite the files being compliant (H.264 video/AAC audio.) Playback via Plex on Amazon Fire TV works fine. Playback of the same files via the PS4 media player also works fine.
FWIW, all of my files were created specifically for the Apple TV.
need a server log to look into this for you. it should give info on why it decided to transcode. if you can also provide the media xml for the same file it would be helpful
Confirmed as well. Even direct play buffers like mad. I’m 99% sure this is due to not having a large enough cache for the PS4 to draw from. Why they don’t add a cache setting like they do in the Media player for PC, is beyond me.
I am having a huge issue with buffering recently too and it is driving me crazy. Seems like a month ago I had some small issue but now the majority of my media is unplayable due to constant buffering even at 720 Kbps. I am using a wired connection that tests at 17MB in PS4 setup.
Server and media log attached.
Also having the same issue using Plex DLNA through the media player on PS4. Everything streams fine to my iPad, so it does not seem to be the network.

what is your server installed on? the transcoding speed drops to be really slow at times. is anything else going on like syncing or other folks watching stuff ( or are you using computer for other tasks not related to Plex? )
Feb 10, 2016 22:36:11:191 [5700] DEBUG - Completed: [127.0.0.1:59915] PUT /video/:/transcode/session/l3x8yg7gjnr/progress?progress=1.7&size=-22&speed=0.2&remaining=47835 (9 live) 6ms 289 bytes 206
speed=0.2 means it is going super slow. ( 1.0 is real time trancoding )
also noticed it seems to be trying to transcode to h264 level 4.2. did you change the max h264 level in settings on PS4? it really does not like anything above 4.0
I seem to be having the same issue as mentioned in this thread. The PS4 Plex App used to perform perfectly all the time but now every single file is unwatchable as it pauses every 10 seconds or so. My PS4 is connecting wirelessly, I tried lowering the quality but nothing helped. Using the Media Player and DLNA I have zero problems and also play remotely on iPhone and an Android Tablet. I don’t feel like it’s my PC as I built it last year and has a six core processor in it, 2Gig video card and 16gigs of Ram. Also only the PS4 Plex app is having a problem. Everything else is perfect.
I’m having the same issues. Not sure if the following helps, but this is what I’ve found:
So I have a ps4 and use the Plex app on it to watch media from my w10 machine with the Plex server installed on it.Whenever I try and watch movies in original 1080p format, they stutter and buffer every few seconds. HOWEVER when I use the ps4 native media player app to access the Plex server on my machine and play the same movie, it does so at 1080p with no issues whatsoever. In fact, it even instantly scrubs back and forth around that movie with no lag at all. Since the ps4 is using the same w10 machine with Plex as the server, I assume the issue must be with the ps4 app. Yes, I can transcode down to 720p on the ps4 and it plays fine, but if the PS4 media player can play 1080p movies off the Plex server, why can’t the Plex app? Seems like the app needs tweaking to me.
Having the exact same issue as described by the last few guys. Mine however still stutters at 720, but not so much. Tested streaming on other mediums and it all works fine, just the PS4 app!! This was working fine and it only started doing this recently.
Again please provide some more info than what amounts to “it doesn’t work”. I have a PS4 and have not experienced this . I am playing a 10GB 1080p file right now on the same version of server that is available to you without any problems.
I don’t doubt you are having issues, but if we can’t reproduce it’s hard to figure out what it going on.
AS mentioned in my original post can you please point in me in the direction of where I can find info on how to record/send logs. I am new to this process and apologize if the info is available somewhere obvious to everyone else but I am at a loss. What isn’t working for me is that the playback stutters constantly. I was connecting to my LAN via wi-fi but as an experiment I tried use an ethernet connection and it still stuttered, albeit a lot less, but still fairly regularly
I’m experiencing similar buffering issues, whats odd can play a 55mbps 4k video without stuttering but playing another video at lower bitrate and it buffers like crazy ever 5 seconds or so, does it not like specific file formats despite both of them being transcoded?

So an update to my previous post - I changed isp and they gave me a new router. Bam - issue fixed! No idea why - old router was brand new, I’m using the same cables and haven’t touched anything else. So it must have been the previous (brand new, gigabit speed) router hardware I was using that was the issue? Anyway, it’s working for me, might work for someone else out there.
And not that it matters now but since this happened, the previously infallible ps4 factory media player app has now started buffering, then hanging (although perhaps this is due to the recent app update)… Lol. Exactly not really lol. It’s 2016. When will ■■■■ just work?
