Again, buffering. Several times while trying to watch an hour long show.
Can some PLEASE tell me what's going on with a permanent fix for this.

need some more info from you like
what are you running plex on ?
what type files and codecs are they using ?
Are files being transcoded ?
Is it on your ps4? And does it happen instantly or halfway through a film, or sometimes both… At 20Mpbs? 8Mbps? What speed have you set it to?
I have to lower the quality to 8Mbps, even though my network should be more than capable. A file running at about 11 or 12Mbps buffers instantly… But at 8Mbps so far everything is okay.
I have a couple of switches (1Gbps) in between my Plex downstairs PC/Server (literally only on to run plex media server, running i5 2500 + 8gb Ram) to my Room in the house running CAT5e cables to my devices upstairs and my router up here (RT-AC68U)…
(Just saying my hardware in case you think its your network)
So I’m pretty sure its not that, I’ve had to use my PS4 as the Nexus player sucks so far. So it sounds like a software update is needed for Plex. Surely the console is powerful enough? I would have thought even a ps3 should be.
Anyway just letting you know you aren’t the only one with this issue. But try setting Quality to 8Mbps, not ideal but so far working.
Wierd thing it does not have the problem for everyone like I don’t buffer set to 20 raising the buffer to 2gigs fixed it for me months ago.
The only speed for me to avoid buffering is 1,5 Mbps... If I use any other device and run it at full/original quality...works perfect... So, it's not the network, it's not PMS..... it's something with playstation and the app... but don't know what...
I read some guys that change the IPC buffer on the PMS...but that option seems to be available just in PMS for Windows... and I'm running it on a ubuntu machine
I bet the guys from Plex are working to fix it soon!
same here... by the way great interface on the PS4 app - I love the sleek design done here.
buffering to hell unfortunately for everything 480p, 720p, 1080p... while all other players (see below) are working (very) fine.
I've to admit I stop using the app on the PS4 and stream directly from DLNA to PLEX(DLNA) without an issue.
PS4 : default setup (8mb)
PS4 is wired to gigabits switch.
Mac Mini does transcoding (2009 / Dual Core 2.6Ghz / 8GB RAM / 256 SSD). Video are on the NAS (wired to same switch with the Mac).
Other clients works without issues - including an iMac 10m away connected through a power line (500mb Netgear).
WiFi clients (Mac Book, iPad 2, iPad Air, iPhone...) are working perfectly.
Videos size: 1Gb up to 2Gb for 90min to 2h.
MKV or MP4 file format
Audio stereo(!) or 5.1 AC3 or Dolby
When does it happen:
For some videos after 5 sec(!) or several minutes. However once it starts to buffer, it then buffers every 20sec / 30sec or so.
I stop watching usually after x10 buffers as my patience is unfortunately over.
I'm sure the team is working on a patch/fix ;-)
Yeah same analysis as fur fix for me here.
This has been going on for ages now, with many threads about it.
There must be an update coming soon.
For me it isn't happening so much now I am not converting my files to MP4, just using MKV. However it is not perfect.
yeah this is a big problem.
It's only the ps4, its trying to connect to the plex as a remote server and not local.
I contacted plex via twitter and they referred me to the forums :/
Just wanted to chime in as it seems I'm having the same issues, although on PS3. Just noticed this the last few nights as it is probably ther first time I tried streaming 1080p MKV files. Had to drop the quality down very low - 1 or 1.5Mbps I believe was the highest I could get (480p) and still watch without consistent buffering. After that, I watched a 720p MKV movie and it played smoothly at original quality (5.1Mbps iirc).
I also use a Raspberry Pi 2 running Rasplex (which has it's own issues, but not buffering) and when I'm away from home stream using the web browser UI or the iOS app. My PMS is on a Vista AMD athlon X2 2.6ghz 4gb ram (I know it's an older machine, but it's been re-purposed for a PMS primarily and does run very nicely). Seems it's only th4e PS3 that has this buffering issue for me. I'll report back if I experience it anywhere else.
I know people are working very hard on this project, and I appreciate everything they're doing. I know we'll figure this out, I'd just like to help with as much information as I can.
Are you guys just turning on the PS4 and going directly to Plex or were you playing games prior to using Plex. I do get buffering from 1080 files over wifi from an HP Envy i7 laptop with 16GB. Hardwired though, everything is fine. Anyway, what I was going to say was, that if I've been playing Advanced Warfare, I sometimes have to reboot the PS4 because if I go into Plex after AW, it buffers like crazy. I think AW has a memory leak or something.
I'm just curious - and please don't browbeat me if this is a stupid comment - but wouldn't all this be a somewhat moot point if we could sync media to the PS4?
If that's a capability that will be coming soon then perhaps PLEX is working this issue from that angle at the same time as the buffering issue.
Just a thought, but I would appreciate any comments regarding this.

I doubt sony would let that happen.
Well that’s unfortunate.
I suppose I’ll just have to wait for the good people at Plex to figure it out and fix it.
Thanks for the fast reply.
me too

This is pretty much my guess as well. But yeah, best case scenario would be either straight Sync/local file option or something where Plex would download/store the local file in the background while streaming. At this point I'm not sure if PS4 even supports local mp4 playback...?
I just bought a plex pass so I could use the new Plex app on my PS4 (wired on my network, not wireless). Needless to say it is unusable to stream any 1080P movies without constant buffering. The same issue I have on my Rokus also. The onlly system that seems to work without ANY problems what so ever is my WD TV Live. I will be canceling my PLex Pass since the app is not usable on PS4 to stream at 1080P which is what I want on my 80 inch TV. It appears from this forum that a lot of people are having buffering issues with PS4 Plex app and yet Plex i snot addressing issue.

you're problem is something different..cause I stream 1080p smoothly with my configuration, I've problems only with subtitles...
@atlantanorth
sounds like hardware your running plex on is not fast enugh sence your roku and ps4 has issues the wdtv does not need any transcoding itself it has support for every file type under the sun.
Welp. Guess I'll go eat my cold dinner while watching a 720p movie in 480p since after reading all the complaints there seem to be no solutions.
If I understand correctly, this is likely a PS4 issue, not necessarily Plex (though, it could be optimized). The PS4 has a Gigabit Ethernet port, but hasn't been fully optimized/enabled by Sony. On 120 Mbps speed, running everything via Gb, I only get a max of 50 Mbps down on the PS4. From what I have read on the web, Sony just has to patch this with a firmware update.
