PS5 Transcoder fails to open subtitle fonts

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577 (Windows)
Player Version#: 5.32.1
Plex Media Server Logs_2022-02-25_19-16-32.zip (4.2 MB)

When playing a 1080p HEVC video with ASS subtitles, the transcoder fails to open the subtitles font file. Dropping the quality to 720p works as does playing the same file at 1080p on my Xbox One X. According to the Console log, the transcode appears to proceed anyway, but only a black screen appears after trying to load for a couple seconds.

Can you try downgrading to plex server version: 1.25.3.5409-f11334058

I was just about to create my own topic where I also noticed transcoding seems to fail when subtitle files are included and noticed yours.

Same situation, subtitles fail to load on PS5 but are fine on other devices (firetv, shield, etc).

For me, the issue seems to have been introduced somewhere between 1.25.3.5409 and 1.25.6.5577.

I’d prefer not to downgrade, honestly. It’s not causing me enough grief to deal with that. But I can also confirm that it is a recent issue and was working as late as Feb 13, though I don’t know what my exact version was at that time because I have automatic updates turned on.

Someone on Reddit found a workaround.

I can confirm there are issues with 1.26 and playing of at minimum ASS format subtitles. Downgrading to 1.25.6.5545 has fixed the issue.

Update: This got fixed in the newest beta, 1.26.1.5762.
