Put some love in Plex Web´s photo features

Hello,

i believe the main effort of the developers is put into Plex Web´s video features. But because I like to use plex as an allround solution i would appreciate if the actual rudimentary image features could be slightly improved.

My suggestions:

0. Fix breadcrumb navigation

  • navigating back using the breadcrumb navigation while viewing a single photo seems broken - the album is not shown anymore. Is this a known issue?

  1. Add some basic viewing modes
  • Fullscreen
  • Slideshow

  1. Add options to control image-resizing in standard, fullscreen and slideshow mode:
  • Resize images [none | only big | only small | all] (default = big)
  • Keep aspect ratio [true | false] (default = true)

    Thanks!

+1, but also bring back the old feature of clicking OK/Enter views the single image, Play/P starts the slide show.  There is currently no option to view a single photo at a time and hit left/right to scroll through your pictures at your own speed.  You are always forced into slide shows.  The old Plex Home Theater (Windows) had this feature and it was removed.

My photo collection is fully tagged with metadata (IPTC Core and Extension). In Windows Media Center (which dates from 2004), I'm able to select photos by keyword tags for viewing in a slide show. It would be nice if Plex was able to do this as well.

Please like the 1st post in the following thread if you want the photo library to support tag features. This way we can eventually get enough votes for the developers to work on this feature:

Thanks!

I'd already done it - but thanks for pointing it out.

Wow. 4 years ago (and a year before that) people brought up the fact that Photos is still not getting any attention by the developers. Plex sure has come a long way for video and added a number of features including sync and automatic uploads of photos from mobile devices, but once the photos are on the system, how many people actually are looking at them? I’m guessing not many but not because they don’t want to, but because the ability to do so is still so limited.

One of the reasons I use Plex is that I don’t want to put all my photos into the cloud. I don’t trust the cloud providers with such personal information and more importantly, photos really chew up cloud storage FAST!

I think most, if not all, mobile users are frustrated with how to manage the photos piling up on our devices and how to deal with the small disk space on them as well as retaining the abilities to access them. The apps that are on mobile devices do a great job of making photos accessible and easy to share with people, but it is impossible to keep all your photos on your device.

Plex really could be a shining solution for this problem but it would require making the Plex app at least on par with the apps on the mobile devices. This means we need:

  • tagging support
  • albums that are more than just a collection of photos
    • smart albums automatically updated by tags, maybe machine learning (if done locally)
    • ability to sort or view them in different ways (currently it seems random how they are sorted)
    • PERMISSIONS, restrict viewing, downloads, uploads, etc
  • slideshows
  • full screen browsing
  • better timeline including filters and grouping options
• better sharing options, including sending links without users needing to sign-up for an account
  • ability to download albums or individual photos (goes with fixing sharing)
  • uploading from friends / family members that are authorized for libraries, so people can add to albums, e.g. “Family Reunion 2018”
  • separate out “playing” photos from playing music, so you can still play music on Plex while simultaneously viewing photos
  • better GIF support

A year later, and not even a reply from anyone, let alone a developer. This pretty much confirms that photos are not getting any development or love. This combined with the fact that automatic photo uploads is broken on Android, has made Plex a completely useless tool for photos. I’ve now started to migrate all my photos to another product.

Some good ideas here. Is anyone paying attention.
I would love to use the Plex Photos system too - but without some further input from PLEX developers to deliver on features like those mentioned above; and the ability to actually look at the photos (zoom in/out, scroll around the zoomed image, etc), rather than just present a slide show, Plex Photos will never do what us users searching for a competitively priced (the one-time price of my Plex Pass) photo management and presentation platform, are searching for.
All the nice professional photo management platforms (Mylio, etc), are way to overpriced for me to consider. Come on Plex, you have created a good foundation in Plex Photos. Just a little more work is needed - how about it?

I just gave up on PleX and moved all my photos to Synology Photos.
