Put WAN address in "Allowed without auth" question

HI all,

unfortunately all HDMI ports on my TV are dead (and the LAN port on my main plex server too) due to what I think is an error in our electrical circuit at home (already called an electrician). My backup server is not on prem.

TV is an old 2011 Samsung TV with Orcas Plex-App which is not longer developed and is not able to sign in to my plex Account. (What a great app that was back then - thanks Orca & HD1080)

I installed a new server on an old Raspberry-Pi and sure enough I can get Orcas App working with the “List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth”. Of course my RPi can’t convert video fast enough and the old TV isn’t capable to direct play my content…

Since I have a static IP at home (true IPv4 no DS-Lite) I tried to allow my external IP adress to work without auth on the backup server hosted in a datacenter but no luck so far. Orcas app tells me it found the server but I have to log in.

So my question is this: Is it possible to allow a remote network without auth - in my case my static external routable IP at home, or are only private RFC1918 adresses allowed?

I only need it for ~2weeks till the new TV arrives (and the electricity is fiexd).

Thanks

Yes, you can allow your public, static IP address. This note is from the documentation for this setting:

Just ensure that you specify the IP address itself and not a network (no trailing /mask or /prefix). Also ensure that there are no spaces or tabs in the list, if more than one IP address or network is specified.

Thanks philipsw, I’ll try it without the trailing /32 which I have in place right now.

Still no luck.

local and remote Server are both the latest version: 1.21.1.3876 and my IP from home is entered correctly (also checked in Preferences.xml and triple-checked the ssh auth log on the server to be sure it’s the right IP). Plex-port is open on the remote server.

Smart-Hub Plex app still tells me “Test failed, server is reachable but it returned “Access denied” Connect with your Plex account or turn of ‘require authentication…’ .”

If someone has another hint to get this working or can tell me what I’m overlooking I would be grateful.

The TV at home is of course in a privat /24 network behind a firewall. Allowing this private /24 network too sadly doesn’t work. (I thought maybe the player advertises the private IP to the server, too)

Thank you very much

Check the Plex client and make sure that non-secure connection is allowed for local connections.

On the server under network enter the IP address of your network in the networks that does not require auth. Like for me it is 192.168.0.1/255.255.255.0,127.0.0.1/255.255.255.0. The first IP should match what your gateway address IP is.

Thanks @Alucard1, tried everything but couldn’t get it to work - but I found a solution. I made a site to site wireguard vpn between my ubuntu server far away and my OPNsense box at home. As soon as I had a private IP to work with, I could connect the Samsung app without auth.

Of course I thank both of you for your help.
