Putting family videos into plex orientation issues.

So I am running plex on pc with client on roku. When I watch my family videos (taken with different mobile phones) on windows media player on pc and on the phones they play fine with proper orientation. When I put the same videos into the plex server and play them on the roku client half the videos are wrong orientation (sideways, upside down). What is going on and how do I fix this.

I have the same issue and was hoping there would be a better solution other than resaving all the videos explicitly setting the orientation rather than using the EXIF data. This isn’t a new problem, as you can search the forums and there are plenty of mentions, but I have yet to see a solution in Plex or a response from a care rep that they’re even working on it.

From what I understand, there’s no single standard for video metadata like orientation, but every other media player and platform seem to handle it, so curious why Plex is having so much trouble.

How do you resave the video and explicitly set the orientation? I’m willing to take the time to do so, just dont know how. I am using windows 10 btw.

This is really silly that this has yet to be fixed.
At the very least they could add a button to allow you to switch the orientation.

Much easier said then done. Your talking about streaming and not playing a file from a file share. Plex runs on many different devices and rely’s on different players on different platforms. If any of them don’t support this it would become very problematic. Then factor in direct play vs transcoded material and it gets super complex quick and basically not doable. Much easier overall to fix the content properly and be done with it.

I apologize for Necromancing this thread. However, before you lock this thread and delete my post, the all mighty google has chosen this as the number one response for a number of my queries, thus my time being invested into posting here and seeking the proper resolution or a link posted to the proper thread the answer already lies…

When adding content to Plex, we rename and restructure our folders to provide consideration to the plex engines needs.
Once we get our content ingested, library added, and fully indexed, we go to our tv, or mobile device, and open up the plex app. There we navigate to our content, home videos of children or events, and attempt to play the item we see thumbnails provided for.

The thumbnails are correctly orientated, raising hope that when we select the item it will render properly and play, alas, we find it upside down or more frequently, sideways.

The OP of this thread requested a method of fixing this issue… however though alluding to a solution available by forcing orientation and re-rendering content, no one has provided the method of HOW to do this.

There are alot of documented ways for PHOTOS, via other systems/solutions… but what about videos?

I have searched on several occasions for a few days now since launching my plex server… I have spared no expense and purchased a thousand dollar plus unit and loaded it with nas grade drives and nvme ssds. I have a $4,500 desktop computer more than capable of converting 5tb worth of content into what ever format and quality I would like…

So, willing to put unlimited money, time, and effort into this… Please…

How do I re-render, or modify exif data, or indicate proper orientation for my videos?

Thank you in advanced wise one who provides this popular request.

Blake

EDIT:
It is a portrait video in question.
Recorded via a Note8 Galaxy phone.
It was recorded holding the phone normally, as in, portrait, with home button at bottom.
The video file has the detail of : Orientation 6
Width 3840, Height 2160
It plays with correct orientation via Plex Web, and via VLC on win10.
When streamed to a SonyBravia 64" tv via Plex app, it is played in the incorrect orientation, sideways.

I would accept any solution that can be applied in bulk, such as re-rendering all video content in said folder or with said extension to explicity define orientation as X. Or disable streaming orientation adjustments so the file is played as it is specified and not modified for streaming thus changing the view orientation to an incorrect setting.
