QNAP released a CodexPack 4.5.01 (I think it’s 01) recently
I just checked my QNAP.

What determines when hardware is used for decoding / encoding?
So far, I’ve only seen (hw) next to encoding. And might I add, the quality effing sucks!
I would like to reverse it. Use hardware for decoding (MPEG2VIDEO) and software for encoding (720p H.264). Is it possible to force this?
Unit is QNAP 251+ with 4GB RAM.
It can not be forced. Some codecs (key here) are not hardware acceleration compatible.

As additional information, here is a (dated) chart of Intel Quick Sync per processor family.
May I ask a stupid question ?
I got PMS 1.9.3.4290 installed on my QNAP and I can see under Transcoder, advanced settings , I can enable hardware transcoding for my Qnap TVS-673…
Does it work now? Since I have the option to enable it?
Yep!
You should read the support page and save headaches
Well I thought I did …
COOOOOOOOOOOL
Sorry again Chuck… But… where do I see that my NAS is supporting hw encoding, because I dont have an intel CPU ? The model I have is AMD Ryzen Embedded…
So how in earth does it work? Confused
Im trying Avatar on my Samsung QLED 8 series curved:
Server states is Direct Streaming, but the tv buffers on 4K 51.3Mbps 4K ( original ) .

Actually the x73 family is NOT a Ryzen cpu, it is an earlier generation processor and HW transcoding is NOT currently supported.
There are some library dependencies that Plex is waiting for Intel to release final code on (likely around the end of the year) before they can potentially enable support for it.
Ok now I even more confused.
ChuckPA says its working, you say its not working. The server CAN enable the option… but its not working!?
Does it work or does it not work with QNAP TVS-673 ?
Thanks @MwC_Trexx On target!

No problem Chuck. Trying to “Load Balance” here for you where I can. I know you are SWAMPED right now from the announcement.

Short answer: Currently - NO!!
Longer answer: Eventually - probably
Why does Chuck says its working as a Plex Team member when its not working?
Why is the option available if it dont support the server?
Come on guys … the info you give out is misleading info
What happens if its enabled on a NAS that doesn’t support it? Does it have any performance downsides if its enabled and dont support it?

Chuck is getting slammed with posts across MULTIPLE Plex forums right now related to HW transcoding I am sure, so cut him a little slack if he skimmed your post and misread the model # and gave the wrong answer.
If you READ the options it says 'Use HW Transcoding WHEN AVAILABLE". It’s not available currently so it won’t use it and falls back to SW transcoding just as before.
The x73 will generally handle (2) 1080p transcodes (depending on source media) at the same time so this isn’t the end of the world right now.
IF/WHEN it is supported for the embedded AMD GPU in the x73 (again post Intel library release), then it will use the GPU for HW transcoding.
I am having the documetation update again.
Allow me to be perfectly clear.
- Intel Quick Sync Video (QSV) capable processors are supported
- Any other combination of AMD and/or nVidia is a best-effort transcoding but is not supported at this time.
Thanks for clarifying , and it wasn’t an attack on Chuck . I actually thought it was fixed, since I asked in another thread in september. Also I thought it was fixed since I actually could enable the option.
Keep up the good work
and sorry for asking the question.
