QNAP Hardware transcoding fro PLEX

Sign out your PMS from plex.tv, wait 2 min, and sign back in.
Or restart PMS

Tried it, doesn’t work.
I removed plex server from Qnap and Reinstalled - betaversion 1.9.0.4252. same result
Could betaversion 1.9.0.4252 be missing hardware acceleration?

have to use this version for HWT

Thanks guys

Works great - Worth every penny of a plexpass  -)

ty chuck for your feedback.was there mention of the plan though for nvidia and amd graphics card for hardware acceleration? like nvidia NVENC.

I am unaware of any thoughts engineering has. I know, from the Linux perspective, we will need the libvaapi updates Intel is currently making. Without libvaapi, PMS won’t be able to communicate with any GPUs other than the CPU-integrated one.
I having closely followed the libvaapi updates very closely since someone found the bug in their library and fixed it. Since then, Intel has been moving like a bullet train towards releasing the 2.0 version of the library. They have been adding support for all their processors to that library. When we get it, it will make for a sweet holiday season

Will this work with Qnap TVS-673 ?

Not yet, but the 673 can transcode 2 streams via sw currently. The Linux drivers due pave the way though for hw transcoding to be potentially supported in the future.

Ok cheers

Would love the hw transcoding on that beast .

running Version 1.9.3.4290 on a QNAP TVS-671 and the option is not there. Checked the processor and it does have the Intel Quick Sync Support. This feature REALLY needs to come down in to these high end NAS boxes with HW support built in. I have had my unit doing up to 5 steams at once with SW transcoding but would LOVE to use the extra hw transcoding! WHY oh WHY is it not there especially with the QTS 4.3 upgrade moving it to 64-bit.

Well the feature is on the preview version not on the main one.

@colotti

Which TVS-671 processor option do you have?

Folks…
I need to know which PMS & QTS versions you’re running and which processors your units have.

QNAP TS-453A running the plex preview version build 1.8.1.4140. Is there a new omen that supports transcoding in hardware?

The TS-453A two available processors both support Intel Quick Sync Video. You are advised to upgrade to the latest PMS version (1.9.3) to obtain the bug fixes since 1.8.1.4140

@ChuckPA

Intel(R) Core™ i5-4590S CPU @ 3.00GHz

According to the Intel site this has Intel QuickSync Capability.

The latest PMS code I am running from PLEX Pass is Version 1.9.3.4290 (PlexMediaServer_1.9.3.4290-9798172d4_x86_64.qpkg). The checkbox option is not even showing in the Transcoder section which according to most posts it should still be present as a PLEX pass user so maybe something else is up?

I’d think since the processor supports it we should at least get the option to “try” and experiment with it until it’s officially supported, so I am baffled why the option/checkbox is not even visible"

Thanks for at least replying! I’d love to see this working on this unit! I have a lot of users

Okay! For what it’s worth, I did have CodeEXPack 4.5 installed. Just on a HUNCH I removed it, stopped and restarted PMS and the option shows!! I think that may be something we should note here. Not that CodexPack is even usefull but it must have locked up the access to HW acceleration when loaded. No need to even use it if you only use PLEX and I don’t even have the default multi-media directories.

Still…“official” support at some point would be nice

I have a QNAP TS-453A (and Plex Pass).

The hardware acceleration option was available. I checked the box, but did not get hardware acceleration.

I rebooted the NAS (takes FOREVER with this QNAP device), and still not hardware acceleration.

I changed the transcoding option from “Automatic” to “High Quality” and the hardware acceleration started working. (HW encode and HW decode).

I have a high bit rate 1080p H264 video that used to peg my CPU to 96-98%. Now, it happily transcodes with the processor around 25%.

Very happy with this!

I played around with various playback rates. Some rates will have a wonderful picture, some will be “blocky”. The lower bitrate / resolution that gives blocky or wonderful picture was dependent on the bitrate of the original video.

Also, I like that I can now “Direct Stream” to a web browser (used to always transcode in the past).

Great job on this guys…it’s really wonderful!

I need to know which PMS & QTS versions you’re running and which processors your units have.

PMS : 1.9.2.4285
QNAP : TS-251+
CPU : Intel Celeron J1900@2.00GHz
Memory : 8Gb
QTS : 4.3.3.0299 Build 20170901

There is a tick box shown in the “Advanced” area of “Settings > Server > Transcoder” of “Use hardware acceleration when available”, and in my instance that is ticked. I am therefore assuming that my combination of hardware and software is supported by the latest available PMS, and I am successfully hardware transcoding “stuff”.

To all:
Codex Pack 4.5 is extremely problematic . There are many posts where use of the Multimedia share and its interaction with CodexPack 4.5 have caused media to become inaccessible due to bugs in CodexPack 4.5

Unless you absolutely must have CodexPack 4.5 it is advised you remove it. I have been in contact with QNAP about this. They concur CodexPack is problematic.
