Qnap LOTR 4K buffering

Hi all,

I am trying to play LOTR 4k from my plex server in a QNAP TS-251+ NAS.

The CPU on the NAS is going 80% and of course there is high buffering.

I tried playing the movie from both from my LG Plex app but also from my XBOX series X. Same problem.

I understand that the NAS is not powerful enough to transcode this file. My network connection is fast, though.
I am uploading the plex media server log and i would highly appreciate if somebody could help analyze and nail down the problem.

Many many thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry. insufficient log file. please provide the ZIP.

What you gave left 90% of what’s important out – sorry.

And adding to @ChuckPa here

Do it right after reproducing

Here you are guys.
The incident happened yesterday 23-12-2020 after 23:00

I enabled logging (not verbose), then i reproduced the error, then downloaded the log file locally.

Many thanks in advance

Thank you for the logs.

Now for the bad news.

  1. Your file is encoded with HEVC/H.265
  2. The J1900 CPU in that QNAP does not support HEVC in hardware
  3. nor does it have enough CPU power to decode in software.

  1. You also have subtitles involved

  1. Either the format (PGS/VOBSUB/DVDRIP) or the player settings are requiring the subtitles to be burned in ( Not enough CPU power for subtitles , independent of H.265)

The choices are:

  1. Re-encode the video and burn the subtitles in permanently PLUS convert to H.264
  2. Buy a much larger NAS
  3. Make certain you don’t use HEVC/H.265 on that NAS. It is not capable.
  4. Enable more capabilities in the player settings

selected audio stream is not the first audio stream and direct play stream selection is not enabled

Thank you very much for your help.

I worked around it by making my Nvidia shield as a PMS and added the movies folder to its library.
Now i was able to watch the movie in 4k UHD, only without subtitles. When i enable them, it starts buffering forever. Not sure why.
Also with Shield as a PMS i notice the following"

  1. LC C9 native Plex client does not play the movie at all.

  2. Nvidia shield clien plays the movie but with subtitles off.

  3. Ipad. and Iphone play the movie perfectly fine even with subtitles on.

Any comments welcome.
