Hey Plex fam !!
So, I did kind of a big file transfer (about 3Tb) from 1 QNAP to another QNAP. All was good but moments after the file transfer finished both NAS started to act up. On my old 469 Pro, one drive just died. No biggie, I had a spare, so I just swapped it. The other one (TS-451) just completely died. Tested the memory, nada, niet, main board is dead. Contacted QNAP and he did a couple of tests, but I was right, it’s dead. And to top it off they don’t have spare parts for that model.
Sorry, long post… So, I went and bought another one but this time a TS-464 6bay.
Now for my question, the qnap tech told me to get a compatible NAS from a list and just install the new drive in the same order and I would be good to go, no data loss. Just to follow some simple instructions and that’s it.
Instructions are easy, just update the new nas to the latest firmware, turn it off, install the new drives and turn it back on…That’s it, nothing more. So that’s what I was going to do BUT… After the firmware update the software asks me if I want to initialize the NAS (my drives are not in the new nas yet).
I’m trying to figure out if I have to do it or just hit cancel, turn it off and install the drives OR say yes, initialise the nas, turn it off and install the drives. I don’t want to screw this up and loose 16TB of data.
Someone here ever experienced this situation?
*Server is running on another machine, these NAS or just for data storage, not to run Plex, both running in RAID 5.
Thanks
Martin
