I purchased a Qnap 253A, quad core and 8 GB. I have not been able to connect it to Plex through the Roku program. I have spent an hour with Qnap support, and three or four hours with a computer/router specialist. We have tried to follow all suggestions found on line. I have done the simple, and the support help from Qnap and the specialist did the harder work.
Plex sees my NAS server, knows its name, but cannot connect. I have no problem accessing the NAS from Roku Media Player. The specialist was able to get the Plex program to authorize remote access to my NAS through Plex, but the Plex App on Roku still won’t allow a connection.
When I enter the connection code on line, the NAS reports the device is approved and connected, and then the Plex App reports that my credentials are expired. When I bypass this step the Plex App shows my NAS as unauthorized.
Any suggestions? I prefer Plex to Roku Media Server, but I am stuck for now.
My Qunap 253A is hard wire connected to my router. The router supplied by my internet provider is an Arris dg2470a. The two Roku are a 2 and a 3, neither connects, same problem for both. Network router provides both a 2.4 and a 5 GHz connection option.
where did you installed PMS (i.e. the Plex server)?
Plex server program came with the QNAP NAS applications and is installed and operates on the NAS.
where are stored your media files you wants to manage with Plex?
Stored media files are on the NAS, 4 TB Seagate Iron Wolf.
are you sure all devices are connected to the LAN? What is their IP address?
All connected. Roku works, Netflix, Amazon, etc… Roku media player accessed the NAS and plays our videos too.
What did you do to access media files from PMS?
Added Plex app to Roku. Tried to connect. NAS says we are connected, App on Roku won’t connect. Media files being transferred from PC to NAS, played from NAS.
Have you looked on google?
What do you want me to look for?
Interesting, that when Roku media player accessed the NAS, it seems to go through the QNAP media server. Also the Plex app shows connection for a second before going to the error message.
I found out that I can access Plex through the Roku Media Player, but it is dumbed down and doesn’t provide all of the Plex functionality. I am also working on a Qmedia player if I can’t get Plex to work directly.
I have had 2 sessions with Qnap support. While supportive, they are not able to help me. I am trying out the Qmedia as an alternative if I can’t get Plex off the ground directly. I am sure there is just some small glitch, but I can’t understand how I can access Plex through the Roku Media Player but not directly through the Plex app.
To get Plex “off the ground” on QNAP is very straight forward.
I am concerned about
“When I enter the connection code on line, the NAS reports the device is approved and connected, and then the Plex App reports that my credentials are expired. When I bypass this step the Plex App shows my NAS as unauthorized.”
Both the Roku and the QNAP need the internet connection for at least this first part.
Open the http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web (not https) in your browser
You will be greeted with the “Got it” and “Sign in” pages. You must do this
The setup wizard will now begin guided setup and help you create Library sections
When complete (Finished), you’ll arrive at the dashboard
When you install on the Roku, it is very likely it will say “Your credentials have expired”
Clicking OK will take you to the “Link” page where it shows you the 4 character code and the URL to link the Roku to your Plex.tv account. Perform this step next
After a few seconds, the Roku will update. You will see your server name located in the upper right corner with the library sections on that server in the left column
Please advise if you encounter difficulty in this sequence (Screenshots where needed)
Thanks for the suggestions. There is some information here I have not seen before. I will try to follow up with it.
The Qunap program on the NAS included Plex in the application page. I loaded Plex from there for a NAS as directed, but some of the steps you mentioned were not included as I remember it. I will give it a try.
App Center - This is the server software. A server is required to exist somewhere. The instructions I’ve given you to download PMS from Plex directly guarantees you have the latest version of PMS at your disposal.
HD Station - This is one of the player packages. It requires a server (^^) exist somewhere on your LAN or a server someone shared with you to use.
Since you have the Roku locally, your primary focus is #1 (the server). You can safely ignore HD station and any other “Plex” apps on the QNAP for now.
