The message states “Plex Media Server version 1.18.3 or higher is required. NAS is running version 1.9.6. Please update your server running the plex.tv web client.”
I am not sure how to fix this error. My QNap is running 1.9.6, my Roku is running the latest version of the ap. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the ap on both devices. I assume the server that it wants updated is the QNap, but this is running 1.9.6 and it wants 1.18.3 or higher, so this is already higher.
1.9.6 is older than 1.18.3 (it’s not actual decimals but more like chapter numbers → main chapter 1, subchapter 9 vs. main chapter 1, subchapter 18)…
version 1.9.6 was released in October 2017
version 1.18.3 was released in December 2019
the latest public version of Plex Media Server is 1.28.2
QNAP’s app center seems to be listing version 1.28.0 as the latest version.
Depending on how old your QNAP is you might be able to manually update the PMS app.
Thank you very much for the information, that makes a lot of sense!
For some reason I cannot get the App to update. I have two servers:
1 - TS-859U-RP. I can uninstall/reinstall the App through the GUI. If I attempt to update the App, or install a new version that I downloaded from the Plex site, it says that it can’t be installed and to see the system log. The system log is blank.
2 - TS-639. Same thing, can’t be installed. It did show 1.28.2 as incompatible in the sys log so I tried 1.10, 1.18 and a few others…these state “failed due to file format error”
In all cases I have tried to install with Plex uninstalled for a fresh install, with it installed and running, and with it installed and stopped.
If your NAS / the installed OS are no longer officially supported and aren’t capable to run a halfway recent version of PMS, you might want to consider degrading your NAS to act as mere storage, moving your Plex Media Server to another machine (one that’s capable of running a recent server version). That’s not just about keeping Plex up-to-date but also a question of security…
