Qnap Plex dying most nights after midnight

Is there a permissions issue occurring when you try to removing things?
I’d Plex Dance the photos but not move them back in until the NAS is stable.
Generating thumbs would run the CPU up. Was it that dusty inside?

On QNAP, PMS runs as the root (admin) user. “admin” can see everything you point it at unless the plex.sh script has been modified.

@markstubb

From your logs, I see a number of photos being (soft) deleted. Do you have these on an external USB drive which isn’t spinning up fast enough when PMS scans?

Hi Chuck
No, 100% of my data is on 3 RAID 5 internal drives. I replicate data from another NAS across the world into this one every night. All of that replicated data is in the Plex media directories. A friend of mine and I replicate our NAS contents to one another each night. Not that any of that matters.

I am now having a new issue, I’m getting 503 Service Unavailable in the web interface and none of my clients can connect anymore. I have tried to restart the service, but nothing so far. Going to try to watch the logs a bit more to see what the problem is so I can upload a bundle.

Just noticed that even though I am killing the service in the QNap app manager, the logs are still tailing and the webserver is still running. Apparently the kill script isn’t working right. Gonna reboot the thing.

PS, it was clean as a whistle inside. Remarkably clean, actually.

Thanks for that Mark.

503 is telling me the HTTP server in PMS is actually stopped.

One other thing I’ve seen on QNAP is the impact of snapshot volumes and where one of the PMS beta’s was accidentally scanning @recently-snapshotted (or similar name) directory.

After rebooting the QNAP, what did you experience? Would it be possible to see the logs (hoping the unit has been quiet) ?

So I forgot to download the logs immediately after the reboot (got distracted by the 3d printer) and got them a bit ago. Not sure if there’s anything useful in there, but the service did indeed start up fine after the reboot. Plex Media Server Logs_2019-08-28_13-38-36.zip (2.6 MB)

The wife is about to leave on a business trip and was synching some things to her ipad and it was at this point that I noticed I do not see her device listed anywhere in the console. I see it show up in the logs, but something about “it has died of old age, ignoring”, shows up. I’ve had countless issues with syncing to mobile devices over the years, so not totally worried about it. The funny thing is all of the sync’d content is actually showing up on her ipad. I usually have the opposite problem where it gets sync’d, shows up in the console, but can’t find it on the device.

Anyway, only adding this info to maybe shed some light on the fact that i’m starting to think my DB is just hosed or something?

I upgraded to 1.16.6.1592 this afternoon.

I do not take snapshots of anything on this NAS. Just use it as a server and nothing more. I’ll double check that nothing is scheduled, but last I checked a few weeks ago, it was totally disabled.

So far, your activities look very good.

  1. I see the orphaned sync list items (dead). At some point, you might just want to clear out all those sync’d jobs and start fresh. It’ll clear the devices and the DB.

  2. I am also seeing some SLOW QUERY entries for the DB but that N3150 CPU isn’t a speed demon so I attribute the slowness to the syncing activity. How is the CPU reporting; Hefty load? How’s the I/O; drives behaving or bouncing around ?

  3. I saw all the codecs come down. They look good.

  4. I do see this and ask if you have any residual Plug-ins you loaded manually before Plug-ins were removed. If not, then it’s something to be investigated.

  1. Remote access returned Successful. It should be green for you.

Thanks for all the help, Chuck. This particular NAS ain’t the latest-greatest, but it was a pretty good Plex box when I originally got it. I was just looking at upgrading after all of this, mostly because of transcoding speeds and syncing to mobile devices, which we do a lot of. Maybe a TVS-672n if I can buy it locally.

  1. Clear them out as far as going to each device and deleting everything? I did notice that I can actually see all the sync’d items in tautulli, but cannot seem to find them in the Plex console anywhere. Not sure where to clean this out.

  2. When transcoding I see the CPU around 80%. I put 8gb ram in this thing as it was the max at the time, but supposedly can go to 16. If I replace it (probably will), I’ll put whatever the max is at the time. The newer QNAP CPUs are usually quad i3’s coffee lake it seems.

  3. cool

  4. I am not aware of any plugins I’ve loaded? I use Tautulli (aka PlexPy) and have also attempted to use filebot before, but gave up. All I ever wanted to do was have an ‘incoming’ folder that I copied new videos to and have filebot rename and move to an appropriate location. Never got it to work. Hard to find any good software that organizes the media into the correct Plex folder structure (movies/mp3’s/photos-videos). Have had to do it manually or relied on Plex agents.

  1. Regarding clearing them out. You should see this under Sync on the left pane. You can delete the items there and they will be removed from the device when it next requests Sync. If the files are gone from the device, there is no harm.

  2. Transcoding at 80% is good.

  3. Regarding filebot, I can help with that. It takes a bit to get into it and set the renaming rules for the computer you’re using but once done, Drag from “incoming”, rename, and it will move the renamed files into the final position with perfect naming. I will help with that if you wish.

  1. Well that’s the odd thing. Only 3 different devices show up in the plex console. There should be 5. One of them is my phone, which has nothing sync’d to it. Another is my son’s ipad which says nothing is sync’d to it, although there’s a bunch of things on it. Another is my daughter’s ipad which doesn’t show up at all, even though it has things sync’d to it. Then my wife’s ipad shows up with a few things sync’d but each item either has a ? or a ! on them. I think the optimized versions of those got deleted on accident. Then my wife’s other ipad pro doesn’t show up at all. ALL of these devices show up correctly in Tautulli, though.

  2. cool, i still want to upgrade the NAS I think as transcoding is still really slow when sync’ing mobile devices. I wish it was way faster or I could tell plex to transcode everything into a separate folder so it’s ready to sync immediately.

  3. That would be amazing. It’d probably make more sense to do a guide somewhere for it as I imagine many more people would benefit from it than just myself. The developer for filebot is not far from me and has been pretty helpful with stuff but I just couldnt get all the gears connected together on that one. I just wanted a place to dump files and have filebot put it in the right place with the right name.

  1. Go look at Settings - Devices and look for those missing devices. Look at when last seen. Start backtracking there. You might need to reload the app after deleting it from “Devices” and bring it in again.

  2. HW acceleration will make a huge difference when syncing.

  3. FileBot’s website, and I believe here in forum too (the FileBot folks are here) @filebot. I can show you show mine is setup to get you started if you wish.

FileBot Node should be the perfect solution for this particular problem, set it and forget it, Unattended Automation with FileBot Node.

I have a bash script for movies and one for tv shows, that searches for the YYYY designation (four digit year), or it searches for the s##e## designation and goes through some naming cleanup, then moves the video.

For me some of the bots were indiscreet, and I had fun learning sed.

Mark,
Here are the renaming rules I have defined.

My movies are on /nas/movies (as seen by the host).
My television series are on /nas/tv

The corresponding naming rules I have:

Movies: /nas/movies/{n} ({y})/{n} ({y})
Series: /nas/tv/{n}/Season {s.pad(2)}/{n}.{s00e00}.{t} (episode based)

All my raw rips I do are deposited and visible in /nas/download.
I do what I need and then drag & drop into the FileBot left pane.
It performs the lookup, allows me to verify the final naming.
I click “Rename” and it performs the final step of renaming as it moves into final position.

FileBot Node will do this for you automatically as was shared above.

@ChuckPa Settings doesn’t have a devices, but I do see authorized devices under my account name. I note that I do not see my daughter’s ipad, nor either of my wife’s ipads in there. There is an “iPad” but none of our ipads are named that, they are all named as the user. If I had to guess, that device could be my wife’s old iPad as it shows a recent sync date. Her iPad pro doesn’t show up though. You’re saying I should see any device that connects to plex in there, but I know for a fact that both my daughter and wife’s (the ipad pro) connected within the past few days. Again, they show up in tautulli but not in plex.

For HW acceleration it seems like the Intel procs are better bets. I’m still trying to figure out what sort of QNaps I can get around here. I live in Asia and the market sometimes doesn’t support the same things I could get in North America.

@filebot thanks for chiming in. I will give that automation a whack and see what I can come up with. I had hoped for a single intake folder that moved things to their appropriate destination but I think I can just make 4 folders (movies,tv shows, music, photos*videos) and go from there. I need to check when my license expires. Maybe links make more sense though. Will have to noodle on that one.

@nibbles, i am actually pretty savvy with bash, but was more concerned about file naming by file meta data and I’m not gonna reinvent that wheel

Thanks yall for being so helpful. Pretty cool!

Yes, the Unattended Automation with FileBot Node setup does assume that you have a single intake folder.

Mark,
Yes, I am referring to “Authorized Devices” . My apologies for referring to the old layout.

Are the tablets “Shared Users” (They have their own accounts you share content with) or are they “Managed (Plex Home) Users” ?

No worries, just wanted to be clear on what I was doing on my end.

OK so the kids are Home Users that have a “kids” account they use. For whatever reason, I decided to create a plex account for my wife and then shared my libraries with her. I wanted to be sure to share everything with her but keep her from using my admin account to change stuff or confuse her.

Regrading your wife’s account, I’d like to suggest:

  1. Remove her authorizations
  2. Have her sync her tablet
  3. Re-invite her to the server again (it will refresh all the lists)

I will need to get some help with the HOME users. (I’m single and done have any ‘home’ users)
