Plex Server keeps crashing

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7775
Player Version#: 1.84.1.4069-ff740b6d

Over the last month I have found that clients (windows, Android, Plexamp) stop being able to talk to the plex server, and only stopping the server service and restarting it, fixes the problem

PMS is running on a Qnap NAS, a recent OS update didn’t solve the problem.

Logs don’t show anything obviously wrong to me, but I could be missing something fatal

Thanks in Advance for any troubleshooting help

I have experienced the same problem. It has been ongoing for approximately 5-7 weeks.
PlexMediaServer has not shut down, but no clients can connect. After restarting PMS, everything works again. This repeats quite regularly every 7 days. I have examined the log files but see no obvious error or connection between the occurrences.

Edit: Oops, sorry, but I forgot to mention that I am running PMS (Plex Media Server) on macOS 12.7.2 and not on any NAS

I got exactly the same problem with my Qnap, plex server 1.40.0.7775 and 1.32.8.7639.

In desperation i’ve gone back to 1.32.7.7571 - i’ll see if this stabilizes the server or not

I have 13 days runtime on the latest QNAP version and on 1.32.8.7639. To date I have had no issues and no disconnects, the devices include 2 Apple Pro IPADs, 3 regular IPADS, 2 android phones Samsung 7+ and an 8, one 75" Sony TV, 2 Samsung TVs and a LG TV, 3 rokus and lastly my Intel / Nvidia PC.

Also my family members have no problem to date. I know this is not very insightful, just trying to add to the dataset.

Currently I have 2 Qnap boxes and a PC running plex servers.
PC works just fine on the newest version, both qnap boxes are playing up, it wasn’t a simple install older version, it was a uninstall new version, install old version and re-index…so far so good

Thanks for reporting this. I found an uploaded crash report for the crash at 08:56 am on the 26th December which I will be referring to the development with the provided logs

Can you please locate this file on the QNAP and zip it and send the zip to me by private message in the forum

/share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/.qpkg/PlexMediaServer/Library/tmp/80789665-c2ea-406f-d7d2a9b2-07fff442.dmp

I can also see some scanner crashes which I will be looking into

@Rigger.Bos

With regards to the scanner crashes, could you please copy out these files and zip them and send me a zip by Private Message - if the zip is too big for the forum, please upload on dropbox/google drive etc and send me a link to download

Thanks

If there are other tracks in that album, please include them in the zip as well

The same with a WD Pr4100 server so not necessarily a QNAP specific problem. Under 1.32.8.7639 and 1.40.0.7775 clients lose connectivity after about a day. I’ve gone back to 1.32.7.7621 which resolves the problem.

I have found similar crash report to the one I investigated above - it was on your WD MyCloudPR4100 server on 21 December at 03:08 am UTC

I have referred this crash to the development team - but I would not mind seeing more debug server logs covering the crash times to see if there is a commonality

This specific crash relates to scheduled DVR recordings and refreshing the data held for the scheduled recordings

FYI… PMS Beta 1.40.0.7775 on Windows crashes every time I refresh metadata

As I see music tracks referenced there is a bug in the 1.40.0 beta related to lyrics. In case its related to what is being debugged here you can disable find lyrics in your music library which will stop the server crashing.

My references above were relating to the Plex Media Scanner process crashing when analyzing loudness and not the Plex Media Server process crashing

Dear All,
Same story on my QNAP TS 453-A.
After the last Plex Server update, currently running version 1.32.8.7639 the Server keeps crashing.
I’ve to enter the NAS, for the Plex app to stop then start the app again manually to have the Plex Server back on line rurrning.Struggling for week with this keep looking for software updated but nothing since time.
Very frustrated.
I noticed it crashes mostly when I open my tablet and it start synchronizing my music playlist for off line listening.
I had a 256 GB SD card but it was not enough for my playlist. Now I changed it with 1 TB one.
That cause when Plex removed the Library Sync option I had to create a Playlist with my whole library to have all my music available off line with me. But the “Download” function sucs compared to the old “Sync”. Downloading half of my play list to my new tablet before discovering space was not enough took months. And now I’m back to zero considering this new Plex Server crash issue preventing me to Download everything again,
Compered to the past, the only difference is that I set the download not anymore for original media quality but 192 kbps to save space. This tablet is a Samsung S8+. Whith my old IPad, synchronizing was perfect but also the new download function worked faster.
Now downloading 9000 songs takes months. And with the Server crashing every time is impossible.
Looking for suopport and assistnce.
Many thanks.

It’s crashing more often now. I thought it might happen at the same time as the periodic scan as I had read about that in another thread. But, I’ve got periodic scan set to “every 12 hours”, and the crashes don’t happen every 12 hours.

Having the same issues. Did complete rebuild of the database but didn’t resolve it.

Ill try 1.32.7.7621 as well to see if it resolves it.

Please ensure the server runs with debug logging enabled - see Reporting issues with Plex Media Server | Plex Support

After a crash and a restart, please download the server logs andn attach the zip in a post here

I am another victim of random crashing. Both on beta 1.40.xxxx and public 1.32.8.7639.
I have no muisc. DB repair did not help

Follow-up, after crashing regularly, It’s been stable for 4 days. Nothing’s changed on my end, no NAS updates, regular usage behaviour.

The logs you provided do not show any crashes - is crash reporting in server settings / general disabled? The last attempt to report a crash was in June 2020

The logs show version 1.32.8.7639 in use with the main log files covering period Jan 15, 2024 07:25 to 09:21.
Other log files shows server shutdowns and restarts at these times

Please ensure Crash Reporting is enabled in advanced server general settings
Also if you get a crash, please capture the logs on next relaunch after the crash and not many days later

Thanks for the logs - your crashes are different and I have now referred the details to the development. Appears to be related to transcoding media for download.

Enabled crash reports. Crashed sometime last night (Jan 15) around 6-7pm and sometime this morning (Jan 16). Attached updated logs
