Qnap sutting down Plex because of memory shortage

Qnap TS-863U
12GB ram
31TB disk pool

Server Version#: QTS 5.1.0.2466 (21-7-2023_
Player Version#: 1.32.5.7349

saw this thread from a while ago;

basically, I have the same issue, however, this has been running like this for ~6 years, no hardware changes and only SW updates.

the Qnap box does almost nothing else but run Plex.

In the last week it started this:

Warning 2023-08-01 06:13:52 — — localhost — — — [System Message] PlexMediaServer has been automatically disabled by QTS to free up system memory.

Warning 2023-07-26 23:57:58 — — localhost — Hardware Status Kernel [Hardware Status] NAS out of memory. Started kill process: 5759 “Plex Transcoder”. Disable some applications to free up memory, or expand the system memory.

Warning 2023-07-29 06:21:22 — — localhost — Hardware Status Kernel [Hardware Status] NAS out of memory. Started kill process: 2314 “Plex Transcoder”. Disable some applications to free up memory, or expand the system memory.

At first I thought it was just a one-off and did a clean re-boot, along with re-installing the current firmware and Plex server.

it’s done it a couple more times now, totally at random…

the disk pool for Plex is less than 50% used, and it’s Ram usually is at ~25%.

Don’t have it setup to store loggs, but will do to capture it if it does it again.

Any off-the-top suggestions?

Cheers

Simon

This is going to sound wierd but at some point did you add more memory to your system. I did and it ran fine for a long time until it started doing this. The only resolution was to put the origional ram back in and I have neve had the problem again.

RAM also got me wondering, the unit is spec with 2 ram slots. I would have thought either 4, 8 or 16, keeping the ram matched. 12 seems odd.

Well, yes and no.

when I put it together, day one, it came with 4G ram, nothing like enough, so upgraded it to 12G.

this was before I even turned it on for the first time.

I guess it’s possible a memory dim is failing, but if that were the case, I would expect other issues to come up?

Having the same issue with the latest update (1.32.5) on my TS664 with 16GB RAM 120TB. CPU usage goes to 100% and RAM usage hovers at 95%. Happens when the Issue goes away when I stop Plex. Going to try rolling back the update.

OK,

well, it’s been OK for 3 days straight… kind of hesitant as to what to do next…

I plan on doing a full memory test at the end of the week, and if nothing untoward, look at stepping back a couple of versions of Plex and see if the issue goes away…

OK, been a while (other stuff to deal with)

did extensive memory testing, no issue found, but decided to change the memory, so two new 8G sticks installed.

no change.

Updated Plex to Version 1.31.3.6868 (PlexMediaServer-1.32.6.7557-1cf77d501-x86_64.qpkg)

stayed up for a couple of days, but then we are back to:

Warning 2023-10-03 05:06:57 — — localhost — Hardware Status Kernel [Hardware Status] NAS out of memory. Started kill process: 14461 “Plex Transcoder”. Disable some applications to free up memory, or expand the system memory.

followed closely by:

Warning 2023-10-03 05:06:58 — — localhost — — — [System Message] PlexMediaServer has been automatically disabled by QTS to free up system memory.

I’m now at a loss as to what the issue is…
