Will Plex Transcode and Stream At Least One Off-Site 1080P Movie with Qnap ts-251D?

I’ve read a ton of stuff but all this technology stuff doesn’t click with an old guy like me. I need to get a NAS for file sharing around my house (2 users only) and maybe later file-sharing off-site. I also run a small PC (i5-4570) currently running Plex Media Server and has no problem transcoding and streaming my collection of movies. Streaming is done for only one user at a time - me! I won’t ever be using the Plex for others to share. All that being said, I was going to go with the ts-230 for the file-sharing but now wonder if I bump up a notch, to the ts-251D, if I would be able to stream movies to my second home as I do now with the old PC? I read somewhere that going with the intel chip would transcoding. The ts-251D has the Intel Celeron J4005 CPU (dual-core 2.0 GHz processor). Why do I want to run the Plex server on a NAS? One less machine running is a good thing for both electric consumption and space. (Already running a separate PC for my Blue Iris camera system. Just too many PC’s!) I’m reading that transcoding for 1080 (max I would use) is supported but would transcode AND stream off-site? (I’m sure at home the PMS would stream fine. It’s off-site I’m concerned about!)

(And no, I can’t get a Synology - I have a Qnap 4 bay expansion enclosure that I was using as a DAS.)

THANKS MUCH in advance for any help on this.

@Username-001

The TS-251D will serve you better at Video Transcoding (actual conversion of the video) than the aging i5 because it has 2160p HDR capability in hardware.

–however–

  1. The i5 has the raw horsepower to burn subtitles for 2 streams. The J4000 series might get 1 stream. It’s not guaranteed. (not tested)

  2. The i5 will be much more suited to audio conversions because it’s a quad core. If you can find a quad core J4xxx based QNAP (I think they make a couple) then you’ll be in very good shape.

@ChuckPa

THANKS much. Appreciate the response so I can move forward.
