My server has an Intel Core i5-8400T processor.. The question is, would an additional decoder card (nVidia) improve the performance and quality of the H.265 decoding? If so, which one is recommended?

The -8xxx CPUs are in the CoffeeLake class. (UHD 630)
They are solid performers and good for about 600 Mbps of video transcoding (source video total rate).
If you’re going to add a Nvidia card, you should look at How new the GPU card is and which Codecs it supports (decode & encode)
Part of the evaluation is to estimate how many audio transcodes your i5 can handle -IF- the Nvidia (or the QSV) is doing the video.
Don’t forget to look at FormFactor. You’ll find different form factor layouts can reduce capabilities.
